Hi folks. I am confused as to how NP does its ranking. I have noticed races where the top 2 early or late horses will have another ranked above them or in between them. Why wouldn't this horse be either the #1 or 2 of the group? Here are some examples

Tim,
The red arrows indicate why the 1 and 6 are rated #1 and #2 Early. Their high end speed rating expectation gives them the ratings. The yellow arrow, the Early Speed Points indicates that the race will run late.If the race runs late we line the horses up on their low speed expectation. If the race runs late, the blue arrow indicates how the horses line up on the low end. The same would be true on your other examples.

Also GP7 has 12 Early Speed Points so the rankings are line up on the Unpressured High score side.

Thanks Dick. Unfortunately I still don't have the latest RDSS version so I don't see all the arrows. Ted still working on my problem.

One thing I didn't clarify is the issue of Early Speed Points. (There is a lot of information on the web regarding Bill Quirin's studies of Early Speed Points.) We look at the highest 3 speed point horses, here indicated by the yellow arrows. We find the 1 with 4 points, the 4 with 4 points and the 5 with 5 which total 13. We categorize as follows: 1-12 points means a bias Early, 13-17 means a neutral bias, and 18 to 24 mean a Late bias. If the race is biased Early or Neutral, we line them up on Unpressured or High. If the race is biased Late, we line them up on Pressured or Low. In our example we see 13 speed points, (If the program doesn't show the points, we can just add them in our heads because this box isn't on every page.) This race finished 4-1-5 and did run early. The 4 paid $33.20. $1 exacta was 48.70 and the $.50 tri paid$147.80. I hope this helps understand Early Speed Points and how we can use them.
