What do you use often besides RDSS.

With so many registered users here there should be more than a few people willing to say what sniper gun is ready at the mouse.

First let me say that RDSS is a good piece of work which will only keep on getting better.

As of late my 2 top choices would be:
1 - Thoromation (with Energy)

2 - Synergism 4

Am sure you'll hear from the usual participants, as to the others, don't know if they can be shaken from their complacency. However, personally I would be interested in hearing from the WINNERS of the just concluded Pace n Cap contest as to what they used, how strong it was in influencing their subsequent decisions, and lastly, would they recommend it to others?

Believe their input would be unique; they went beyond conversation and did it when it counted.

Regards,
Chris

Chris,

You played a good contest. What did you use?

As for me, I handicap using certain output from 3 software programs...not picks...but proprietary output. I do not use past performances or a racing form at all any more because that is the same information the masses have access to. All 3 programs use the same $1 bris file. JCapper, MPH, and A+ are the 3 programs I currently use. Of the three, I have been using JCapper the longest, since 2004. Coincidentally, or not, I have been a consistent winner at the track for the last 3 years.

Jim

PS...I'm not real kicked in the pants with the "other than RDSS" title of this thread because I think RDSS is a very good program(s) and improving all the time. I have won more money than lost while using RDSS in the testing phase and, after all, that is the true test of any software program. Ted has graciously let me be a beta tester and offer some input and ideas and I am grateful for that opportunity. Bottom line is I am more comfortable with bris data as opposed to trackmaster data because I have been using bris data for so many years. If RDSS used bris data, it would definitely be used daily by me. It is that good and offers a unique look at the races.

PPS..I feel invigorated since "being shaken from my complacency":D So much so I will be away from the board until next weekend. Hope you guys have a great week.

Jim,I agree with you I currently dont use RDSS but feel Ted has come up with a really fine program.

As far as programs go Syn 4 and basically using the TPR numbers.Jeff

Ted

I think RDSS is a fine tool for the Sartin Methodology
and I am very honored that you have asked me to test it for
you

I use it everyday every race

I am working with Brooks who is using Spec160

I am using RDSS and I am happy Ted gave me a chance to test it. I also use Workhorse and have had good success with that program for many years. I have als used Fast Fred for some extra data. I feel Ted has the making of an excellent program. Also, in the past i've also used Pizzolla's Master Magician with some success. The ecclectic approach has worked for me, and using the various data put together to make my final decision.

You might be interested to know that Bob Cochran, who is the consumate gentleman, created Workhorse Pro and is a member of this board.
I can tell you first hand, that this program is an excellent contender selector.

I also own Fast Fred, which is a nice little program depending on what you are using it for but not too predictive.

The Master Magician has it's moments. I'm still looking for a pdf copy of the manual.

In summary and from what I derived, RDSS is a far better program then all of these because it's gives you quite a bit more information then the others. I have to tip my hat to Ted Craven. He's an innovator. You'll will shortly be seeing lots of bells and whistles that will be added to the already existing and excellent piece of work that he has brought forth. This will be the all purpose handicapping tool.

Naturally, their will always be detractors to whatever is said and done here. They are becoming more obvious.
There will always be the ones who knock something or someone not to their liking.
I am of the belief that if you can't say something good about something then it is better not to say anything.

The truth is the cream always rises to the top.

I like to keep it simple. I use Val 4.
Iprint out the E/L Graph and the Validator Screen to take to the track or simulcasting.

I think RDSS is already a very fine program and getting better. I am currently lucky enough to be testing it and having success. Previously I have used many programs, liking Equisim quite a bit. But for my money, RDSS is my present and future choice.

I use my spreadsheet, which is now integrated with Access for Jcapper like functions, it is a learn that has many years involved. With the Bris single file format, that I use for several other programs when I feel like it. Often I check into something deep I get the files for Aodds & Val4 to see how they did and so on.

Since the middle of last year I have tried at least five different software programs.

Val
spec160
HTR
Synergism VI
HSH
HOS
RDSS
and HTR yet again.

Others I have looked at but not tried are All in one, Netcapper and Jcapper.

Once I get interested in something I have a tendency to research things pretty thoroughly.

I'm currently trying to get up to speed with HTR. I only gave it a cursory look back in December. It has a learning curve, but nothing like HSH, which I DO NOT RECOMMEND. After two and a half months of hair pulling with that software, I still couldn't figure it out. I was up and running with HTR in less than a week.

HTR has a nice interface and many fine options, but the most use I can forsee with this program is learning how to export data to Microsoft Access and create my own data profiles, racing forms, reports, etc. for the factors I deem important. In fact, I see a LOT of value there--which is something I had never even considered before.

Since I know absolutely nothing about Access there is another rather large learning curve involved...but it's one I very much want to learn. I taught myself Excel, but I'm going to need a lot of help with Access...unless I want to spend six months learning how to use it.

As far as RDSS is concerned I think it's a very fine program, and I like most of what it has to offer, but it's missing a few features I would really like to see. I just wish I could combine HTRs MaxVel program with RDSS, and then I would have the best of both worlds.

Parts,
I also agree that Ted's program once it is done will outshine the others. I do use Workhorse to get my contenders and work them through RDSS. I have had much success doing it this way. Your response is well taken.

trackmaster past performances for a dollar a card. i can watch replay of any race in the past performances by simply clicking the date next to the race. well worth the price.

then i manually enter lines into synergism 4.

silly game.

during the summer stakes i used all-in-one v6 along with spec160 as like a second opinion. use to use aiov5,mph,pl3 but got confused so just settled on pl3, then spec and then 160. went back to v5aio cause i think shoe read that someone manually entered the pace lines and used the contenders in the val programs. i think? do you recall this shoe? i played with v5 and found (although short prices at times) it had some great overlays. the boss(wife) got a bonus and i upgraded to v6. i compare the e/l graph with the last fraction read out in v6 and see a "coralation type comparison". i use either trackmaster pp's or the HDW pp's.

Sorry, Shoe if I was misunderstood. I only played around with that program on a trial type basis, and I never really got down and dirty with it. I neither liked nor disliked it. I just didn't really spend enough time with it to form an opinion.

I didn't follow through with it, because I got sidetracked by some other programs I was looking at...and I decided to go in another direction.

One program is fine enough for me when it (along with my own cranium) is generating successful results. I just today finished my third 20-race cycle with 14 wins (betting 2 horses in all but one where the top scoring horse owned all the rankings and went off at a generous 8-5). My ROI for the cycle showed a profit of 96 cents over every dollar invested.

Make that one dollar and 96 cents over every dollar invested.

I use Valm , for those who don't know thats Validator manual input. I mostly use Bris Ultimate PP with no track variant. I don't enter a SR , I let Validator figure that. I try to use a paceline that best represents the horses running style, not the fastest line. Theres nothing I have been doing with Valm thats not covered in the FUs. Validator has its quirks as Im sure other programs have but the key for me is to stick with one program and learn it. Keeping records, tracking what readouts work for all the different situitations. Being consistiant with the input , there are no rules only guidelines and those can change to suit the situiation. As far as this last contest goes I made many mistakes on the betting end ( at least 5 races where for one reason or another I went against Validator and of course lost) and many races that Validator just plain missed. I have only used Validator and Im happy with it , but I can see its not for everybody, manual input is slow and tedious to say the least , but it will force you to look at the numbers and get a feel for the race like it or not.
