Hi Mike
I am "Shanta" on Ptd forum.

I've been familiar with Mikey's work for years man. One of the sharpest, hardest working cappers in the game today.

I'm not really familiar with Pizzolla's work but was very impressed with the DVD that Pizzolla sent out showcasing the Black Magic program. If I was currently using Handicapping Magician or the Master Handicapper, I would buy Black Magic in a heartbeat.

As far as match-up goes, while I am far from an expert, I would think you could incorporate the match-up into Black Magic just like you can with Ted Craven's RDSS.

Richie. It just surprised me that you would buy it given that you had a very good year ( 13,000) using the matchup and you have access to the best handicapping mind ( THE HAT ) ever to play this game.Mike P is a nice guy and maybe a very good player, but no one is close to the HAT.

I too recieved the DVD, It was well done, Mike P, is a very very good salesman, he has that special knack that is needed to sell. I did buy the Master Handicapper back in 1995 or 96, the oddsline approach never worked for me so I passed on future programs of his.

I guesse during bad streaks it maybe tempting to buy a new program. His black magic program even though he says its not a black box will be used by some people in that manner. To me it look like it would confuse me more than help me. For me the ideal program is one which removes the clutter in the drf and only shows the most important data and allows your mind to see the picture in a clear manner.

Only going by the dvd and what I have read on this forum, I can't see how the 2 can be incorporated. The Black magic program is going to allow the user to choose among 3 or 4 set paceline selection modes, depending upon which of these you select you will get different pacelines. The matchup uses powerlines to select pacelines and whatelse is in the matchup book. Black magic uses something simular to TPR ( which ignores fraction 1 )where the matchup looks at the first fraction. The matchup doesn't look at final times or atleast pays little attention to it.

I am always willing to listen to someone who can show me how I maybe wrong.

Mike,

Your probably right. I am far from an expert on the matchup and would have been better off not making the comment.

Me , either. This last month I have been humbled to the point where I doubt that I know anything.

I have never been at such a point of frustration. For 5 years now I have felt that I have been inches away from mastering this game just to find out that I am still inches away. With the economy the way it is and my personal financial situation I am now finding myself in need of making money at this game, breaking even is just wasting my time.

I think what most of the people who question Richie's interest in the Black Magic software are forgetting is:

The Match Up was created for "WIn " wagering. Jimmy has stated on many occasions, that when doing the Match up to get the winner, the place horse is eliminated. The Match Up is primarily used to select the "WIN" horse.

Suppose Richie decides to wager on exotics . ??

Jimmy has also stated, he doesn't play exactas or trifectas.

I hope this clears up the mis-understanding.

IMHO,

Bob Cochran :)

The reason I started this subject was becouse I thought the Hats Matchup was the end of the road to success at the track.I like many here have bought more than 1 program, it just seems like for some reason we ( maybe just me ) are always in need of finding something more to push ourselves over that magical threshold which seperates winning from lossing. How many more books, programs does it take?

If you can hit 40 or 50 % winners , who needs to hit exactas or tris etc.

Mike,

It's a matter of the correct fit. I learned the Match up several years ago, but i prefer exotics. Unless you are making large Win wagers, 40 or 50 %
winners at low mutuels will produce minimal profits at best.

On the other hand , if you take the 40 or 50 % winners and use them for exotic "KEYS" in exactas, trifectas, and or superfectas, you will need a large bankroll to cover horses eliminated by Match Up techniques.

Many handicappers prefer not to key, or box. Everyone has a "comfort level"
which must be maintained for mental stability.

Each individual must decide what works best for themselves, it
doesn't have to make sense to anyone else. IMHO

Hey , Thanks. I can probably throw a thousand questions but I'll just ask one.

You have seen the posts, questions and practice MatchUp races.

From your personal experience with learning the MatchUp coupled with the confusion / frustration you see , what element, baby step, etc., do you see as the primary problem, in general?

Richie alluded to "intuition", letting the race come to you to get to that
"Hat" place, where its a nice and warm feeling.

Currently, I am going over the Richies post on "Stacking" and " Pictures ".

Stacking lines on a horse to get a picture of the horse. Then, Stacking the Early group of horses, to find a dominate and to determine is the race
"Early" or "Other than Early".

Sounds simple enough, but pure numbers "alone" dont always get the picture.

Richie was right about intuition.

If you or Pat would like to start threads in "Hat Check" area to help folks please go right ahead man. The posts will be approved as soon as I see them ok?

The Parente's learned the Matchup from Jim LONG before I even knew what the heck it was. :)

Area needs to be moderated per Hat's request but you guys are approved without question.

To get 40%-50% betting one horse would be great.

The "rolling" Daily Doubles and " rolling " Pick 3's are more than enough as a choice of exotics. Have you seen the payoff of these ? Real nice prices.

Almost at least half the time , better than the exacta or trifecta without having to bet as much as those exotics. Check previous result charts and you can make up your own mind.

Especially those trifectas, holy crap. At least one horse whether place or show is half the time some " left field " horse who's past performance lines say the animal is clinically dead and if he so much as twitches , would die instantly.

"Knowing " who's going to win the race , whether 40% of the time or better is a good feeling. A money management plan can be formulated according to one's percentage.

Then again, there are professional para-mutual investors that win, but all have different styles, like the teaching members at PIRCO.

It takes a special mindset for not only to win, but to confidently exploit the exotics successfully and consistantly.

That's why Bob Cochran is an expericenced professional and probably one of the 1% who is truly a para-mutual investor by trade , if he so choses, and is a PIRCO Charter Teaching Member, tutor and legend, so my opinion here is sheer opinion.

IMHO,
Black, red, white or whatever color you prefer, ther is no magic in horse racing. Is a full time job if you want to win, regardeles the handicapping concept in use. Do I use the Match Up? Sometime, one of my weakness is selecting a single horse as winner, that's why I'm an exotic player. I'm wondering if the Parewnte's bros. are using other handicapping ideas as an adition to the Match Up.

Thanks for the information.

Like the way you stressed the word "Actual " in conjunction with positioning.
