View Full Version : P.A.I.H.L 2012 Team Contest

The Team Contest is back this year and RDSS is a major sponsor with 3 month Unlimited RDSS PP+Charts Data prizes for each of the 3 team members. Last year's prize fund also included over $1000 cash.
Here is the signup link: http://www.paceadvantage.com/forum/showthread.php?t=89301&page=1
Here are the rules of the Contest from last year: http://www.paceadvantage.com/forum/showthread.php?t=78004 Essentially, teams of 3 collaborate on consensus picks in a number of higher class races each Saturday from beginning of January 2012 through Kentucky Derby Day. 2 or 3 picks are submitted to be scored for points in WPS and Exacta pools. Teams play each other in Divisions, then quarter, semi and final round eliminations.
Last year, our old friend and Matcher extraordinare Charlie D won the contest as part of 'Team Zenyatta'.
3 teams represented RDSS and 2 of them made it all the way to the Final round: Pens Pens RDSS finished in 4th Place overall (out of 50 teams, 150 players), comprising Rverge (Chef!), Chris D (cdax) and Gaz (and returning again this year); and team Squatheads finished in 8th position lead by the illustrious Dogkatcher, along with Goatchaser and Dodgerbecky (sure to reprise their plucky run this year).
Congratulations to all the PaceandCap members who performed so well!
Folks can use this thread to organize teams of 3, seek other team members, then post the consolidated team membership in the PaceAdvantage Team signup thread above. Remember, you have to be registered at PA, and if you are not already, you can do that here: http://www.paceadvantage.com/forum/register.php?
If you do field a team this year, it would be great if you could identify yourself with some kind of Sartin affiliation, e.g. RDSS, Matchup, other software, PaceandCap, etc.
Go get'em Teams!

Chef, we have our work cut out for us matching the performance of your team last year!
Best of luck and skill this year to you, Chris and Gaz.
But best news of all - Sid the Kid is baaack! Let's hope he stays safe from those head-bangers.

Hi Ted,
Between playing cash contests and my regular play, there is little time left for me to concentrate on other contests. I have been playing a bunch on the Derby Wars contest site when I get in the mood to match wits with others. I do enjoy playing in them. I have backed off the National contest scene some as I perceive less value for me to the contests than in the past.
Best of luck to all the RDSS teams!!
Jim
Wow, Ted.
Bringing in the ringers.
I also hope we get more teams to represent from here to show 'em what this group 'cappers can do.
Best of luck to you, your team and all who participate.

Possibly those that wish to participate on a team should list themselves here so that more teams can be created.
In deference to this site, names for the newly formed teams should refer to
RDSS and/or The Sartin Methodology. Ex. Sartinista Pro's (RDSS)
It's a long protracted affair (Marathon) but it should be fun to compete against your friends and peers.
Are you in ???
Ted Craven
11-24-2011, 08:57 AM
And, just to be clear - you don't need to be using RDSS: any tool or approach reflective of the Sartin Methodology is great: Matchup practitioners, Synergism, Validator, Speculator, Energy/KGen, etc, etc.
It's all good!

I just thought I would drop by and welcome RDSS, Pace and Cap, and the whole Sartin Methodology community to the newly created PaceAdvantage.com Challenge Series. I am especially pleased to offer congratulations to Ted Craven for stepping up in such a big way to give back to the handicapping community. Truly, a commitment to the game we love.
RDSS has come on board as the title sponsor for the series, one that should prove to be the equal of the very best handicapping competitions out there.
We are very pleased to bring you a variety of handicapping formats including ROI, Team play, Bankroll Building, Parlay play and Match play just to name a few. Competitions are designed to allow the individual player to participate at a manageable pace. We want quality not quantity!
Once again, we look forward to the participation of the RDSS Teams! That was quite a showing last season.
We trust you'll enjoy the competitions as much as we look forward to organizing them. Special thanks to Ted -- your passion and energy shines through in all you do.

I would like to participate , but have no team, last year I had a foreign team , ( a HSH team ), not this year, thou.
This year I would like to be a RDSS team and will be available to whoever needs a team member.
This will be a weekly thing, no matter what format, I hope, as a daily thing may be too much, for now, but weekly is no problem.
If you have room , or want to form a team please post here or PM me, and we can work things out, last year was fun and RDSS did extremely well.
Best Wishes

Hi Patrick,
I know you are a hard worker and good people, I would be happy to be on the same team with you.
We need one more member.
I came up with the name "Sartinista Pros (RDSS)".
If you have a better name, feel free to make a suggestion.
If this sits well with you, let me know.
So now if all goes well, we need another member to complete the team.
It's a wide open affair and luck has a lot to do with it. Any team can win.

Thank you Jay for stopping by and sharing a few more details of this batch of contests. I don't know how you manage to do all the organization you do - I hope PA is paying you the big bucks (or passing on some hot tips ).
Trying to organize as much participation as possible - there are people here who really know their stuff.
Hopefully as new developments arise, you can let us know more details.

Bill,
You might have to give it a little more time for folks to check in, say the weekend? There are 5 weeks to go before anything begins. Of course if time commitment is the main issue, well that is different.
For my team, I know I won't be able to participate every Saturday for 4 months (most though), and that's where the other team members can take over for carrying the team.
If you do decide to continue, I wish you every success!

Ted, I think you know that I have been an active contest player and competitor. I would love to represent an RDSS team but I'm really not up to it.
I won the P.A.I H.L in 2010
However, my life drastically changed during last years contest and I was almost not there to finish it.
I promised myself that I would lighten up and reduce any stress I might incur.
There's no one that likes contest play and team competition better then me but I'm not the same person I was a year ago. I don't feel I have the endurance and/or mindset for a 4 month stint. There's just too much going on in my life and I have to concentrate on my priorities.

(And parts, congratulations on that earlier contest win!)

partsnut,
First off, sorry to hear about your health issues. Never good to hear!
Second, the Kentucky Oaks - Kentucky Derby was two seasons ago, so I can confirm no shinanigans regarding the P.A.I.H.L. last year.
Finally, if you enjoy Contests like I do but don't want or need the stress like me, you are in good company. I personally don't enjoy the burden of over extending myself to the point where handicapping becomes a job. I always keep this in mind when designing the various contests.
In my case, especially because I'm so busy organizing, scoring and managing contests like the P.A.I.H.L. I rely on my teammates to lesson the load. The league only runs Saturdays and only has 8 races. Some teams colaborate on every race. My team divides the races up, so that one guy does the first 3 races, another the 2nd set of 3 races, and I close with only 2 races. I do the 2 races by choice to lesson my load. This worked out great for us. When one of us is away for a weekend the others cover.
Based on what I've seen at Pace and Cap I would suggest that you have a very strong community with a high level of respect. I don't think you would be in too tough to find teammates that would work well in meeting your particular needs.
I would urge you to participate to the best of your ability and rely on your teammates.
All the best,
Jay Trotter

Jay,
Thank you for your concern on my behalf.
It is very much appreciated.
I would never deny the fact that you and PaceAdvantage have done an outstanding job in providing some great entertainment to it's members and horse racing fans across the internet.
You have always been a creative, hard working fair person and I personally have always appreciated and respected you for that.
This has been a very tough year for me. I've had an assortment of issues
that has turned my life upside down. The main issue was a life threatening health issue. Thank G_D I'm feeling better now and have to try and get my life back in order. This is my first priority.
PaceandCap' has some very astute handicappers that I would take pride
in participating with in this years team competition but I don't feel that at this point, I'm physically or mentally up for the challenge. As well, I would never want to be a burden to any team. I've always carried my own weight.
I may enter some of the individual events if possible and time permits.
I wish you success in all your endeavors.

I don't want to name any team - each team should express their own individuality, choose their own team name. (I was only requesting that you identify yourselves as RDSS users, or PaceandCap members, or Matchers, or whatever).
I have been gently suggesting to a few folks behind the scenes that they consider checking here if they are interested in a team Contest (or contest play at all). Contests (or teams) are not some peoples' cup of tea, though.

Mary,
I think the thing to do is - register a NEW User Name at PaceAdvantage and name it Lumberjack (go here: http://www.paceadvantage.com/forum/register.php?)
Then when that new Lumberjack User Name is approved at PaceAdvantage (it takes a few days), check into the PAIHL Team thread with your new Lumberjack User Name (and not the Mary name you already registered), and make a post signing in and saying you are a member of that Team (just like you did already with your Mary user name, but just with the Lumberjack user name).
The PaceAdvantage PAIHL Team sign-in thread is here: http://www.paceadvantage.com/forum/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=89301
Mary, your alternative would be to simply go ahead and use the User Name you already set up at PA: mary gionet, instead of Lumberjack.
Good luck!

Best wishes for good luck and skill to all 6 teams participating in the PAIHL Team competition. By far the largest representation of any handicapping community or software in the whole Contest!
Pens Pens RDSS
Squatheads RDSS
RDSS Team Sartin
RDSS Dangerous Old Dams
RDSS Rebels
RDSS Team Texas
There is still time to form a team - the deadline is apparently January 7 - the date of the first official round, not December 31, the practice round.
Also, there may be room for one single individual on an orphaned team from last year missing an RDSS player this year - the waggishly named Craven's Ravens  (I have no connection ...). Consider PM'ing the returning team-members mentioned in this post --> here (http://www.paceadvantage.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1209470&postcount=204).
To form a team, just get 3 people together and announce yourselves in this thread --> here (http://www.paceadvantage.com/forum/showthread.php?t=89301).

Thanks Ted.
Good luck to everyone here. As of this post RDSS is kickin' some butt in this practice round.
Looks to be a very competitive contest this year.

Congrats to all the RDSS teams that played in the practice round but especially the Dams for a fantastic showing. I have a feeling the other teams are going to know just how "dangerous" you are before the contest ends.

Not sure if this is 100% 'official' but here are the results of the practice round yesterday. Jcapper team in front by a nose, with 4 other RDSS teams in hot pursuit, and 2 other ones finishing up the track a ways. For better and for worse, one day does not tell the tale - we're working out the kinks here.. BUT - congratulations to the teams - I know everyone gave it their all!
Looking forward to the opening round next Saturday.

This is a great schedule, and starts late in the afternoon, the only downside for me and a few others are that if you do not have unlimited downloads, which I do not, this card is tough, I have 20 downloads a month, and up until this card I was able to Do these contests on the weekend with no issue's, as Aqueduct for the Pick 4, and normally a race or 2 in PAIHL, yet PAIHL also had maybe 2-3 other tracks, this time 7 tracks , much tougher without good communication with your Team to see who will do what, so this week I hope I will have that great communication this week. Otherwise downloading all races to cap will most likely put me over my 20 downloads a month, and I am only doing contest's currently, which for me is great practice, and last year was great with my fellow team members we would get togehter on Skype and discuss our capping , who would take what races, and often switched it up frequently to keep things intersting, itwas meant to be competetive, but fun also, and it is , really great how well they do with the scoring and everything associated with these contests.
I wish you all well this week

Yes Bill we did pretty good for a change. We've changed our strategy and it seems to be paying off. I hope I don't speak too soon.
You guys are ahead of us in the overall standings though. I think all our teams are doing extremely well. I'm glad the RDSS is standing out so all can see.

It was another strong showing for the RDSS teams this week
With The Dangerous Old Dams and Squatheads way up top
getting 5th and 6th place.
Or Team Sartin # 17 did ok Ted and Bill L. had some nice winners for us
Way to go teams
Bill
Bill V is modest - in his own picks for our Team this week, he had the Spiral Stakes at TP $12.40 Winner and $245 Exacta, while as a Team consensus we only managed to catch the $21.80 Place and $10.80 show prices on the Place horse. Such is the difficulty in meshing 3 distinct handicapping styles.
As a Team, we never completely blow, but we never seem catch a big one to finish on top of the heap one week.
As usual, congratulations to the Squatheads for their Occupy PAIHL movement, and a salute to the Dams for an excellent showing this week.
My dream remains for an all RDSS Teams PAIHL Finale

18 $6,885.65 444.5 Squatheads (RDSS)
34 $5,278.30 355 TEXAS RDSS (RDSS)

17 $4,908.50 340 RDSS Team Sartin - (RDSS)
You are all in the playoff's, I ,of course ,did not make it this year, might be my lack of learning ability, or luck, but whatever it is, just know this...
I WISH ALL REMAINING RDSS TEAMS THE VERY BEST

Patrick,
Thank you very much for your wishes, and my congratulations to the other RDSS teams who have made it this far, especially to the Squatheads. Patrick, you and Ray gave it a good go as the Rebels, as did the Pens crew, but the breaks were just not your way this year.
This team play is a difficult, even specialty form of play, and certainly not the only test of the individuals' abilities. In my team's case, my other 2 teammates have done overall somewhat better than I have, individually, though some weeks one of us fares better than the others. Also, some of the chosen races are not races each of us would choose to bet in, and choice of betting race and pool (or choice not to bet) is probably half of the decision making.
I am reminded that all you need one week is ONE good hit.
Good luck (and good skill responding to the luck opportunities) next weekend to the 4 RDSS teams continuing!

First Patrick I apologize for not responding to your wishes, but for some reason I didn't get to this page until tonight. Thank you for that. You are always a gentleman and the first with good wishes.
Ted's right, too bad about the Rebels and Pens not making the playoffs. You never know from one week to another what's going to happen with this contest. You guys gave it a good try though, Good work. There's always next year.
Congratulations to the rest of the RDSS teams especially the Squatheads, who are going to be the team to beat.
Good luck and good skill to all of us remaining.

Well Barb, I was really relieved to see that there was no blood spilled in the Craven family over this contest. I am sure that we both could have done better, but the vagaries of a 3 person team are hard to know.
I guess if we had reliable biorythms we could plan who would be hot or not, but that IMHO was a total crap shoot. You could go 8 for 8 or 0 fer 8, zig when you should have zagged, and vice versa.
Anyway, good luck in the playoffs. I'd rather be lucky than good any given Saturday, at least in this contest.
Bill
Congrats to all the teams who qualified for the playoffs and best of luck for the upcoming weeks.

Well, the PAIHL team contest grinds on to the semi-finals next week, but without 2 more of the RDSS teams - Bil V, Bill L and me as Team Sartin and Barb, Pat and Mary as the Dangerous Old Dams. The Dams had an excuse - they only missed the cut by $1.10 (tough beat, that!) but we were $136 short.
Congratulations to the Dams!
The team play was tough, for me. I am reminded of the old joke headline: 'statistician drowns in average of 18 inches of water ...' Each of the Bills and I had individual times of brilliance, and plenty of consistency, but our consensus strategy just did not work out for us often enough. It was fun convening with these 2 fine gentlemen each week, and sometimes going over our picks in some detail, but I am reminded of how the handicapping/wagering process is supposed to be a 'lonely' activity.
Or, perhaps if our team had succeeded I'd now be extolling the virtues of '3 heads are better than one' etc. I doubt it, but it was fun enough while it lasted. Thank you very much Bill and Bill for your company and for what you taught me during our time together!
However, RDSS Team Texas made it to the next round in fine fashion - well done guys! And the Squatheads squatting ever on top of the heap - we wish you both well over the next 2 weeks. A shout-out also to atlasaxis' team On the Short Line, who also advanced to the semi-finals. Am I missing any other Pace and Cap regulars?
Again, well done all retiring and continuing players!

I would like to extend my hearty congratulations to those RDSS teams still alive in the P.A.I.H.L. and condolences to those who are no longer in the playoff race. All of the RDSS teams gave it their best each week and really should be proud of their overall representation in the leage. Well done one and all.
As well, I would like to single out the Dangerous Old Dams for the tenacious efforts. Unfortunately, they were on the wrong end of that $1.10. Tough beat if ever there was one. Each of you can carry your heads high indeed!

Thanks for those kind words Jay. It was a fun time. I would like to thank you once again for all the hard work you are putting into the contest. I don't know about you, but I like turnips.
Our heartiest congratulations to all the teams that are continuing on. We wish them good luck and good skill.

Dear Barb, I think they should have the Inquiry sign put up. Surely you were forced to take up somewhere along the way. What a photo finish that was, and so sorry it didn't go the right way for the Dangerous ones.
Here is a photo of goatchaser expressing what we hope the squatheads will be doing next week. By more then a head, please, LOL.

A TREMENDOUS CONGRATS TO RDSS TEAM TEXAS FOR MAKING THE FINALS.
I didn't stay up to see the end. What a long wait for you guys. I looked to see first thing this morning.
Next weekend is going to be really big!
Good luck (and from the look at some of those races, that's what is needed more than skill)from all of us Dangerous Old Dams.

Way to go, Team Texas (Dave, Craig, Doug) - all your hard work and persistence is paying off. Go get'em next week: those remaining teams are TOUGH!
Squatheads - you had a great year this year, no accident you have been on top for so long. Yesterday the luck was just not with you, despite all the skill you bring to the game.
I am very proud of ALL the teams who represented RDSS and the Sartin Methodology in the Team competition!
yours,
Ted

Late report: dogkatcher has been vanned off
goatchaser is out to pasture
dodgerbecky can be found wandering about Dodger Stadium
in a daze.
Thanks for all the support for the "squatheads", greatly appreciated. Go Texas RDSS !
Thanks to everyone for their support. Congratulations to the Squatheads for
their regular season victory. Great job guys. Texas RDSS is honored to be in the finals.
We do not take our responsibility lightly. We are well aware of the rich tradition of RDSS
and very much feel the presence Doc and Hat every week. I think Hat might have rapped
me on the head for several of my picks last week. I think at one point I could have sworn
I heard Doc refer to me as dummy. I can promise you I will be channeling there wisdom
this weekend.
I want to thank Ted for the new release RDSS. In my mind is is not only a thing of beauty
but the next level in handicapping excellence. Ted is brilliant and a worthy successor for Doc.
The improvements Ted has made would make Doc very proud. I want to give credit also to
RichieP as I spent time last week reviewing the match up and watching his video and tapes.
I'm just saying we are so lucky to have this wealth of knowledge at our finger tips.
Texas RDSS is humbled to carry our RDSS flag into the finals for all RDSS members past and
present. Our goal is to make all of you proud.
I glad to see such a good showing from P&C (RDSS). Nice work Squatheads and keep pluggin' away Texas.
If we all can't be on top of one contest, let's have each one of us win all the contests (or the remaining ones).
Great job and good luck.

RDSS Team Texas is in mid-pack after the first day of the 2 day Team Contest Finale, not over-extending on the lead, not too far out of it. We all know one good hit is often all it takes in this contest, and while waiting for the luck, staying within striking range is the place to be.
So good luck guys today - you already have the skill!

Best of luck to TEXASS RDSS and each of the 7 Finalists.
It's been a great contest and the RDSS teams made the 2nd edition of the P.A.I.H.L. even more exciting. One big hit could prove the difference for any of the teams.
Special Thanks to Ted for his support of the League and P.A.C.S.!

Well, I would be remiss in not also wishing Jay Trotter and the Parlay Kings also good luck in today's Finals! Jay, you have gone above the call in managing this contest, while also maintaining the highest competitive degree possible. Thank you for everything you have done - I expect all good things to come to you.
And very best wishes in your enquiries into the Sartin Methodology!

Hello Ted and others here at Pacve and Cap. It has been a long time since I have posted here. I would not mind teaming up with Chris Descalos and someone else here. Chris is one of the best handicappers I have known. Regards to all.

Hey Dap! Good to see you again (and still love your avatar!)
From all the time I have ever spent with Chris, I'm with you 100%. Hold that thought for another 9 months and perhaps you can guys can launch a Team Minnesota in the 2013 edition of this contest next year!
Or, stay tuned here for a new Contest coming up right here on Pace and Cap in the next few weeks: monthly cash prizes and a chance to learn and share your wisdom with others ;)
Good luck today in the Derby and elsewhere!

A hearty congratulations to Jay Trotter and his Parlay Kings team for winning the PAIHL team competition! You clearly proved your superiority this season, despite the occasional intrusion of racing luck, and a close study of your picks will be revealing, I'm sure.
A hearty 'well done' to all the teams, and a special congratulations to Team Texas for your dauntless work week after week, representing RDSS and the Sartin Methodology. We are all very proud of you!
