The winning horse in Phila. Park's 8th, El Charrucca, is trained by Ramon Preciado, probably the hottest trainer in the country at this moment.

The 9th race winner at Philly, On Demand, is owned by Rich Santulli, who founded NetJets and at one time was considered the heir apparent to Warren Buffett at Berkshire Hathaway.

Santulli was also part owner of Safely Kept, champion sprinter and winner of the Breeders' Cup Sprint in 1990, a race made famous when Dayjur twice jumped the shadow very deep into the homestretch within feet of the finish line.

I'll never forget the post-race interview when trainer Alan Goldberg was asked: 'Did you think you'd have won the race if Dayjur didn't jump?', or words to that effect.

Like the nitwit that he is, Goldberg answered : 'Why, of course, she was getting to him.'

Safely Kept wasn't getting to him, for sure.

When that same question was immediately posed to winning jockey Craig Perret, the Cajun said: 'Nope. No way we'd win it. He had us beat.'

God love him, that Perret.

I have that tape and I agree. Perret never got the respect I thought he deserved. SOLID rider best remembered from that great Derby with Unbridled.

That 1990 day was marred with so many breakdowns how could one forget it?

hi Tim:

Yes, those damnned breakdowns...

Mr. Nickerson, who was favored in the Sprint... later, one of the greatest fillies of all time Go For Wand in the Distaff.

They give all they have for us, these great athletes. To say we take them for granted may be the understatement of all time.

Shaker Knit went down falling over the aortic aneurysm explosion (from intimal erosion from too much bute) and had to be euthanized with a significant back injury later that day.

Then years later at Belmont, Exogenous flipped, hit her head hard on the ground (which the moron director played at least 5 times) and was euthanized later.

Glad to report my memory was incorrect and Exogenous made it
