Contest to take place May 6,7,20,21

(will include Derby & Preakness)
Open to all PaceandCap members as of April 30, 2023
regardless of handicapping method or software used.


A $50 entry fee is payable by PayPal to the Contest winners at the end.
Each day, you get a $100 mythical bankroll to wager for that day. One card of races will be announced the day before each race day. Players must be involved in a minimum of 30% of all Contest races over the 4 days. Horizontal bets count as 1 'race'. No more than $100 bet per day but a minimum of $200 over the 4 days. Top 4 day ROI% wins. Betting pools permitted: Win, Place, Exacta, and Doubles.
In the spirit of Bill Varone's love of teaching, players are encouraged to provide some explanations for their selections from time to time, though this is not required.

The Prize Fund will be determined by the total entry fees.
(plus some other prizes) with 70% of entry fees going to the Winner and 30% to the 2nd place finisher. Non winning contestants will be advised of amounts to send by PayPal to the winners. Players are on their honour to pay their entry fees at the end.

The Contest closes for entries at 9pm Eastern Friday May 5.
The Contest will be held only if there are a minimum of 5 signed-up Contestants.

Three questions:

1) Is there any cap on winnings?

2) When are selections due?

3) What happens with late scratches? What if a late scratch terminates a minimum wager?

Going all natural this year with no caps. We have taken away the Pk3’s and Tri’s so blowout payoffs are less likely. Caps make it feel artificial. Being over four days with the minimum accumulated bet of $200 evens things out.

You have until post time for selections. As long as the time stamp of your post isn’t later than the chart “off” time.

If your bet is cancelled due to a late scratch so be it. The only case where that would screw you up is if you were trying to get to the $200 contest minimum in the last race of the last day.

Maybe have it at a minor track to show where everybody's skill is.

You can pay by cheque or ETransfer or whatever. Doesn't have to be PayPal. As long as the winner gets the winnings.

Hey Shoeless welcome to the group! Thanks for joining. Thanks to all that have joined.

This is just a little something to have fun with and at the same time honour Bill who passed too soon a few years ago. Ted asked me to run it and I said sure, why not. Many of you knew Bill much better than I. I met him once at Saratoga in 2017 and he seemed a good guy to me.

So, we will just have fun and somebody will be lucky enough to win some cash.

We haven’t had any attempt at a Cup defense yet. Buffalo didn’t follow up and play last year. Matt hasn’t entered as of yet to defend his win in 2022.

5/6 Churchill= 14 races

5/7 Woodbine= Projected to be like 8-10 races on Sunday

14+8= 22x0.30= 6.6 avg or 7 races
14+9= 23x0.30= 6.9 avg or 7 races
14+10= 24x0.30= 7.2 avg or 7 races

Am I doing that math right? So by Sunday, we would have to bet at least 30% of the races or 7 races if Woodbine runs between 8-10 races on Sunday?

Sorry just want to make sure I'm helping out with the math for myself and others :)

And when we are doing Pimlico they usually run around 14 races that day too so

14+8+14= 36x0.30= 10.8 avg or 11 races
14+9+14= 37x0.30= 11.1 avg or 11 races
14+10+14= 38x0.30= 11.4 avg or 11 races

I'm not trying to make it complicated just wondering if I'm doing this right and also if this is roughly how many races we have to have a min for :D

The key words are over the 4 days. It’s not a running average. You could if you wanted do nothing until near the end of the third day and be okay. Up to you to track it and not cut it too close.
