Attacking a Race

2 Attachment(s)
Im mainly addressing this to any newbies out there,in my opinion the first thing you should do when attacking a race is READ THE CONDITIONS.There is a wealth of information there that cannot be given to you by program readouts. This was from a race at CT on Saturday night,if you notice the conditions of the race and look down to the Feb 24th paceline you will see what I mean.By the way in the pp's the small s means state bred just in case you didnt know.I know people will come out of the woodwork and look back at this race and say oh this program or this way would have gotten the winner and that's great AFTER THE FACT.I know everyone has a way of doing things and none of them is wrong. But if you want to improve your cappin this is one thing that will surely help.Oh by the way he went off 8-1 and won.

RichieP 05-21-2008 08:17 PM

Jeff
Ironic you post this now. I was listening to the pro paceline tapes in Club area last night and TWO different pros mentioned on the tapes how they looked at the race conditions IMMEDIATELY before doing anything!

You sure you are not a mind reader bud?

Good stuff

shoeless 05-21-2008 08:31 PM

Richie,Believe me Ray Taulbot said the same things YEARS before the people did on the pacline tapes.Jeff

VoodooFan 05-21-2008 11:14 PM

Forgot about that name and probably others.

Ray Taulbot was another one of Doc's favorite and repetitive mentions for reference.

Jim Quinn's "The Handicappers Condition Book" is a classic read.

Lesson 2

I have been looking first at numbers then looking who fits the conditions of the race,BIG MISTAKE it should be the other way around.Dont just go to your computer readouts first.

If anyone else would like to post how they attack a race feel free even though I doubt I will get much reponse. On PA they brought up if you knew something that makes you a winner would you be willing to share it.I thought about this and yes I would even though on this board I feel most would not.I know Im going to hear Admin say friends helping friends but think about it ARE WE REALLY DOING THAT.

gl45 05-24-2008 07:38 AM

I learn to work the race in a organize and methodical manner. Same procedures and I never deviate from it.

Read carefully the race conditions
Look casually the race, to get a sense of it
I focus on the horse's last 4 races, starting with the last, (times/positions/bl)
Workouts line
Pace and Speed ratings
Race type column
Distance/Surface column
Jocks/Weight column
Horse's box scores

My next step is to find the positive and negative horse's attributes. You'll be surprise how many horses you'll be tossing out. I'm always left with 4, or at the most, 5 contenders. Software is a thing of the past for me. I have been making progress since.
You might ask: are you winning?
????

shoeless 05-24-2008 07:51 AM

Pino,That was good you posted exactly how you go about doing things.Actually I go about it the same way except that I will use CJ numbers to get my contenders hopefully to 4 and then run those through Synergism.Im not as good as you are with being able to interperate numbers as you.

Im hoping some of you lurkers that never post will chime in or at least say hello it would be nice for a change.

steps

Hello Jeff

1 mark scratches
2. read the conditions
3. look at the avp cr number readouts
4. look for running styles and a idea of the pace of race
5 pick lines based on best of last three comperable
distance and class (apv cr- total energy) and pace of race
6 re analyize lines
7. go to the primary line score ; total energy screen
and eliminate non contenders
8 look at the early late graph
9 go to the bottom line betting line
Bet the best two of the top three
10 wait for odds at 2 minutes
11 make my bets based on odds and match up
readouts

12 watch race
13 look at readouts again
14 see what my NJBets balance is
15 smile about 13-14 times every 20 race cycle :)

Bill,That's also good at least this way people can get idea of what others are doing .Jeff

barb craven 05-24-2008 09:26 AM

Hi everybody.

Bill

Your method is what I've been doing, except that I will hide any in the top 3 that is less than 5/2. I'm not at your win rate though.

I've been doing Belmont this week and have been having the same trouble Froggy and some of the others have. Until I read that thread, I thought it was just me. It was quite a comedown from last week.

60 /40

Hi Barb

about hiding anythng under 5/2
I did that back in the day - Its what Doc suggested
These days I can only do one or two races a day
so basically like this title says if I start a race
I have to attack it. If all my reaouts say the # 1
rated horse is the winner I am not going to hide and bet against it
because the odds are low I rather would make the win bet on it
and look at the other contenders for a nice place or show bet
If I had more time and the chance to do many races
I would hide
Today I have to attack when I get the chance

Your doing great

Bill

shoeless 05-24-2008 10:54 AM

I figured since Pino and Bill did such a fine job listing then so would I

1)I go through the races at the tracks Im playing and mark which races I will look at.I only play sprints with horses that have won at least 2 races and turf events

2)Check conditions of race and see who qualifys as a contender

3)I go through each horse and circle the 1's in the 1st and 2nd call then will circle the times.Im doing a kind of Match Up Pizzolla's way he explains this in FU 8

4)I will cross out the horses who I feel cannot compete in today's race

5)pick pacelines will try not to go more then 3 back if possible prefer last race

6)run CJ'S numbers to confirm my anaylsis and further narrow down

7)take remaining horses and run through Synergism 4

I would like to add something here to the mix

BIGGEST WEAKNESSES

1) Not having a good money management plan mapped out before races start[this is a downfall of many astute players]

2) Not being able to interperate info correctly that is before me to be able to profit from the race[i will say 80% percent of the time I have the winner in top 3 at least this was happening when Tampa was running]

noddub62 05-24-2008 12:21 PM

Shoe,

Thanks for starting this thread as it has been very helpful. Lately I have been very unorganized about paceline selection, analyzing output and wager capping. Your post and the others are helping me develope a consistent game plan.

Bud:)

shoeless 05-24-2008 12:40 PM

Bud,No problem but I hope that you will also post on how you go about it there is no wrong way.

By the way you deadbeats out there in Binder land have outdone yourselves 276 views and only 3 people have made an effort to post how they go about attacking a race.CONGRATULATIONS TO EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU.

admin 05-24-2008 03:23 PM

opinion

Jeff
you have the right to say stuff like that but
Please refer to the site as Pace and Cap
The term Binder land make it seem like I am involved and share your
view , which I don't
It would be very helpful if more people would post
there steps
I could not be happier with the method I use
But seeing what works for a few more posters would make me feel better

But If they don't post it it might be for reasons other than being
"deadbeats"

Be patient and kind and goodness will follow

I really hope you continue to do well

Thanks
Bill

shoeless 05-24-2008 09:11 PM

Bill,Binder land and deadbeats were made in a joking matter if you wish delete it from the post.It seems lately when you post something here it's like walking on eggs.Jeff

I am a little surprised that Richie and Ted Craven didnt chime in with a list but I guess they have their reasons.I better sign off for now before I crack some more eggs.

How will your horse run today

-LOVE-
Patient, kind, strond, never-ending,
determined, persevering, forever hope-sending,

confident,commited, it always pulls through,
always fights, always wins, always knows what to do,

ferocious and fearsome yet gentle and kind,
encompassing spirit, body and mind,

hardy and fruitful, can never be killed,
it's a matter of choice and a matter of will,

confusing, bewild'ring, sometimes even strange,
giving and forgiving, it gives birth to change,

burning and spreading, like fire consumes
yet sweeter than candy and finest perfumes,

purging and cleansing pourn down from above,
not a poem or a song but description of love.

Different days require different approaches - "Mind's Eye"

First thing I do is open the pp's to a race. ANY race. Why?

Hoping to get a gauge of how sharp my mind is at THIS time.

After scrolling the field once or twice if things just are not "talking to me" or seem foggy I know that this session will be one of VERY limited spot plays. Matter of fact only TWO will be in play and I will check 6-8 tracks to find some plays. My 2 EASIEST to spot and work because the mind is not fully there TODAY.

a) Races where there are 2 earlies who will kill each other setting the race shape winner as O.T.E. I will look for and bet the horse sitting 3rd in the pp's against today's 1st call and 2c pace. That's my horse.

b) Races where there are 3 matching earlies all running against a 1st call pace within 1 tick of each other. I'll use that pace/throw all the earlies out/ then find the horse who sits 4th at the 1c against that pace and runs well. That's my horse.

If he isn't present in todays race I move to the horse sitting 5th or 6th but who shows a POWER MOVE from 2c-sc. MUST be in THIS segment and NOT from sc-finish. That's my horse.
==========================================================

IF on the other hand that initial scrolling of the race shows me that things ARE sharp mentally I will open things up and work many races from my favorite tracks:
Ap
Bel
Pen
Ct
Mnr

Bill,?????????????????????????really dont know why you put that here.

shoeless 05-25-2008 09:57 AM

Richie,Good job of telling us how you go about attacking a race ,putting it in that simple way I believe was more informative then any of your posts in Hat Check.Just MY OPINION I dont want anyone to think that other people agree with this.Jeff

I love this piece

I feel it puts me in a good place. Its part of what I feel makes me strong and confident. When I feel this way I do well. When I feel different
I lose. I learned this from sombody who has left us recently.
But Is in heaven and in my mind, who I admired very much, I have learned so much from many wise men I posted it becuse its important to me to win

I hope you like it
