MatchUP intuition is "Primary", MatchUP mathematics is "Corollary"/Secondary

Hey, dudes, let's get back to some hardcore "HAT" style MatchUP.

We either know who is going to win the race, even if we are wrong, or we pass and continue to practice and do homework in "Hat Check".

Let's drop all these "other" factors and unsure things that are not part of The MatchUp.

We have The Mind's Eye, FPLR, 1st Call projection as the main meat along with other subsidiary factors like in Richie's 8 month update and other MatchUp mathematics to compare horses to each other.

Thanks to Pete , this review.....

http://paceandcap.com/forums/showpos...5&postcount=11

.....got me to thinking.

To me, seems like The Mind's Eye exercises always bring you back when you get too far off course doing too many things, different directions.

It simplify's things, quiet things in your head, we have so much Match Up information.

The Minds Eye is absolute brilliance of a master teacher, THE HAT. Within it, it is like an Automated Software teaching device FOR THE BRAIN that teaches and makes you see things according to your own , personal mind sight, it teaches The MatchUP according to what you can see.

So drop the class, money earned, trainers, barns, dosage, # starts, jockey, post position, beyer numbers, mud shoes, one computer rating, speed ratings, and other stuff that confuses us and have us in a zillion possible directions and possibilities...that "stuff" has been addressed in The MatchUp 2 book under "bias".

Remember what THE HAT says about horse racing and what Richie continually drives into us:

"EARLY" OR "OTHER THAN EARLY" ?

"The race starts when the gate pops Richie"--Jim "THE HAT" Bradshaw

But here is the kicker...

When reviewing The Mind's Eye threads, again, seeing something I thought already digested.

THE HAT drove into Richie what Richie always tries to remind us of, intuition.

There's deeper stuff in that Mind's Eye , folks.

For instance, look at #6, Kim's Gold :

http://paceandcap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3976

STUDY THIS RACE , FOLKS AND LOOK AT THAT HORSE.

This is NOT a special voodoo situation.

This race is an example of several things that is and will be universal in all races using THE MATCH UP:

1) #6 Kim's Gold has NO POWERLINE to todays projected 1st call

2) #6 Kim's Gold has NO PACELINE to todays projected 1st call and 2nd call (sorry computer users)

3) #6 Kim's Gold has NO LINE for MatchUp horse vs horse, this horse would be ELIMINATED ( you know the method, starting with the the 1st horse in race, matching him with the 2nd horse, eliminating the loser , then going to the 3rd horse, etc.,)

This race is a prime example of why THE HAT said he could not use software.

This race is a prime example of why THE HAT said he does not pick pacelines.

This horse only has "position" to 1st call projection and "powermove" from THAT position or further.

This demonstrates that powerlines and powermoves and other factors are secondary to the primary, which is "INTUITION" ,Early or Other Than Early?

Once we KNOW how the race is going to run , we FIND and GET that horse, EVEN IF WE ARE WRONG.

I initially thought this "voodoo" race was a special circumstance of THE MATCHUP.

It is not.

Where does a horse like to be or is more likely to be TODAY at TODAYS 1st call projected pace?

Like Doc Sartins software, one of its primary purposes, THE MINDS EYE/The MatchUp, is to teach how to handicap

2) Teach you where your winners, according to your handicapping, is coming from

3) Have back up corollaries to support what you choose to give more confidence in your decision and/or show weaknesses in your handicapping and where one needs improvement.

The back-up corollaries for the MatchUp are the 8 month update, The examples in the Match UP 2 book, the math of moving a horse up in position and/or lengths to a projected slower fractions, powermoves, powerlines,etc.,.

The Mind's Eye will bring you back home and gives one the opportunity and chance to quiet the overload of information in the mind and confusion.

The MatchUp is not if's, and's , what if's and but's...,

"Early" or "Other Than Early"

Good job, PeteC.

Another Example-more advanced

I think this is more of an advanced race that needs study.

http://paceandcap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1283

Probably get killed using The Mind's Eye on this one , but maybe not.

The principles still applies, its just knowing WHEN to apply them.

Early or Other Than Early ?

Since the other horses are too far back to make an impact or effect IN THIS RACE, my personal opinion is that there is a deeper Minds Eye sub-lesson in this race.

Mind's Eye projection of a horse with Multiple Running Styles......?

Mind's Eye of paceless races....?

Lets get to it, true MatchUp students.

If you notice, most, if not all, of the Pirco Charter Teachers got sent software with NO INSTRUCTIONS.

One thing it simply did was sharpen and hone in on what the person already knows about handicapping , and, to use what THEY see as unique individuals and talent that could augment and improve the software.

That why pro's like Bob Cochran can probably use ANY software or system and still get his winners, the use of the software reflects HIS sight and handicapping, not the other way around.

Remember an old Pirco axiom :

90% of handicapping is done BEFORE the computer is turned on.

With further reading we get to look at this..........,

Then ask yourself, can the horse go wire-to-wire, or will he forced to run faster too establish the lead in today’s race? If this is true look at the Pressers and determine the horse that is up close, can he take over when the Early horses fail? If the answer is no then and only then look for a sustained horse too win the race.

THEN, We get the cherry on TOP of that......,

To me, that says eliminating the NEED-TO-LEAD horse still does not mean the race will not run early.

That's why this horse won...,:

Evaluating the NEED-TO-LEAD horse(s) separately with themselves or with the other Early group , THIS looks like a great way to determine ONCE AND FOR ALL..........,

Hi,

Im new on board here and sorry to butt in but The Match Up was not supposed to be a entity of it's own but rather a part of the Methodology.Doc was miffed how people would try to emulate the Hat when the match up is incorporated in the programs.Of the older programs Doc felt that KGEN was the best one for matching horses.

This horse only has "position" to 1st call projection and "powermove" from THAT position or further.

This demonstrates that powerlines and powermoves and other factors are secondary to the primary, which is "INTUITION" ,Early or Other Than Early?

So now the question becomes:
"How do we consistently get horses like these ..?"

Remember, this horse "only" has POSITION and POWERMOVE in his past performance from that position or further.

How do we use POSITION and when do we know when to use it?

Either we wait for a number of NEED-TO-LEAD horses that are of equal talent at the first call to kill each other so we know what POSITION the winner will most likely come from.......,

.........or we stack all the EARLY runners to determine "Early or "Other-Than-Early" and eliminate them all and simply find and bet the OTE that is closest to lead positionally factoring in pace of race, like this......,

http://paceandcap.com/forums/showpos...1&postcount=41

.....but if we did that, it would eliminate #6 Kim's Gold who ONLY had
POSITION and POWERMOVE from that position or further.

So, next homework/research assignment is to see does stacking the EARLY like this--

http://paceandcap.com/forums/showpos...1&postcount=41

--also gives us a potential POSITION point from which the OTE winner will come from......so maybe two matchups, matching the two BEST Other-Than-Early to find the winner......,

1) The 1st OTE will be from " the closest to the lead positionally factoring in pace of race"

2) The 2nd OTE will be the best from POSITION with a POWERMOVE from that position or further........., and "IF" he has fractions comparable to todays projected, so much the better, more SECONDARY corollaries and Match Up math to laser in on our ONE horse and give us confidence in our decision, as INTUITION is the PRIMARY factor.

......back to "Hat Check".....,

Santa Anita is about two fifths of a second faster than Belmont, and after adding the five beaten lengths to the 108.3 he runs a 109.3. I add a couple of fifths to this time for track to track, which makes it 110. He is an Early Presser and will destroy this field.

3) Use the number of early runners in the early grouping to help you get started where to look positionally for the O.T.E. winner to come from at the FIRST CALL.

3 earlies in the early group start looking around for the fast O.T.E. guys with strong showings from around 4th POSITION at the first call.

4 earlies in the early group start looking around for fast O.T.E. guys from around 5th POSITION at the first call.

Pretty cool to focus on one thing (early grouping for ex) and all of a sudden realize that something else is also being answered for you(where to begin your "HUNT" for the O.T.E guy) at the same time man!

How the heck do you think the man with the Big Stetson did the stuff he did so FAST! Maybe just maybe he heard answers to questions he hadn't even asked yet. ;)

Seen this a few times.

A NEED-TO-LEAD horse whether he is GOOD or BAD, B-U-T, has NO fractional or positional challengers or equals at the 1st call....,

........ there are NO positions to count, because he DOMINATES , EXCLUSIVELY, that 1st call....,

.............. and there are NO 2nd/3rd position horses with equal or faster pace of race at 1st call and 2nd call.....,

.........and there are NO FASTEST PACE LAST RACE Early or O-T-E...,

.........and there are NO 4th and further who has powermoves, powerline, faster pace of race fractions because they are simply TOO FAR BACK....,

........an "ugly" NEED-TO-LEAD horse that is deteriorating can still win the race, especially when he normally holds the lead until the stretch before he coughs up a liver.

********* Remember this horse? *********

http://paceandcap.com/forums/showpos...3&postcount=19

Compared to the "others" there ARE no OTHER POSITIONS to count, although he is a pretty "ugly", deteriorating Early, knee-jerk is to throw him out and look for OTHER-THAN-EARLY....., there is NONE, position-wise or otherwise.

Look at that = Minds Eye = on this Early horse, 3rd line.

Looking for n-i-i-i-i-c-c-c-e looking, pretty, formful pace lines or do we DO what is instructed :

Back to the basics, man..., be honest, we forget and usually throw him out, if not, you're keeping true and retaining the basics.

I did not because I keep forgetting.

Looks like I have to do like some holy men in isolated Temples and repeat and chant over and over and over again for hours and days or weeks until its "1st-sight"/ "2nd nature".......,

......or sound like Rain Man, repeating over and over, like Turrets syndrome..,

RichieP 08-03-2010 07:17 PM

Hi guys
This forum was asked to be created by Charlie D and others to keep a line open for those who like to "match" horses.

From the posts in this forum by folks it is apparent that there are MANY different forms/methods/procedures to accomplish this "matching". It is as it should be in my opine and it's all good! :)

The "Hat Check" forum is the way that Jim taught ME and he was first to admit that he taught his students differently after speaking with them to determine their strengths/weaknesses. THAT way is the focus of that forum and those that are interested can study there at their convenience.

THIS forum has taken on the life of something kinda nice (I.M.H.O) in that there is a broad scope of different ideas etc all leading to the end result - WHO IS THE BET (S)

I like the fact that virtually all the time a winner is had that the winning capper has taken the time (both before and after) the race runs to give a bit of EXPLANATION as to the thought and decision making process. This goes for those using software as a tool and raw by the pps only stuff. It is ALL GOOD man :D

BTW feel free to post up races when you see one that you like. Just get the full pps up with screenshots (or links to the race pps) for ALL to be able to see, access and work (whether they post or not your time taken to do this helps EVERYONE and Jim would like that VERY much!)

Good matching!

A theme here.

It is probably so simple, that one may ask why even bring it up.

But I believe it is that that separates the professional and consistant winners from others.

It is something most talented handicappers do, but have yet to CLEARLY and SOLELY explain it as a concept within and by itself.

You'll here them mention it in their analysis and explanation here and there, but it is usually accompanied with some OTHER handicapping principal in such that the "other" principle, rule or factor completely OVERSHADOWS its subtle, yet simple and powerful guideline.

I believe if one can train ones self with either conscious drills or as a method/guideline in and of itself, that one can develop that elusive CONSISTENCY of winning , day in, day out, it can manifest....., that it can take one from where one is to levels that may have never been achieved or imagined, or at least, get one out of the hole of stagnation in improving and getting better, faster.

An example:

Horse A: Ten running lines, 4 of them on the lead at the 1st call.

Horse B: Ten running lines, only 1 of them on the lead at the 1st call.

Horse C. Ten running lines, only 1 of them 2nd by 2 lengths at the 1st call and only 1 of them 2nd by a head at the 1st call.

9 out of 10 times, Horse A: will get the lead.

9 out of 10 times, Horse B: will be nowhere near the lead, let alone battle for it or get.

9 out of 10 times, Horse C. will not be 2nd, and even much far less likely to battle the lead horse.

A horse that shows 1's, 2's and 3's in 9 past performance lines , and only shows (1) from 5th..., the chance of this horse running 5th today if the race calls for a horse from this position is remote, not impossible, but remote.

I don't know of a drill to get the habit of this, let the "HAT" quotes be your guide.

Those tapes certainly refresh what we have to do to matchup our winners.

Thanks for the refresher where to start as I have them in my Library from the past and can now refresh my memory a little as this seems to help alot

Thanks

Great lay out Voodoo. I'm off to re-read some stuff from Hat Check.

VoodooFan 08-12-2010 05:32 PM

THIS looks like the best way, THE HAT'S way, of finding the winner of today's race.

THE TRICK seems to be INCORPORATING ALL the other tips (PATTERN RECOGNITION), The 8 Month Update, The 1 Year Update, Patterns of winning Early and OTE horses & horses that can win both E and OTE, fighters, Power Moves, Power Lines, Positions at 1st call, Running styles, Spriners in a Route, Multiple Earlies, etc...,

... AS one goes from the 1st horse in the race, eliminating the loser, matching winner against the next horse, all the way to the last horse in the race.

Projected 1st call & The Mind's Eye guide us thru the process keeping the other tips in mind.

Fastest Pace Last Race reminders:

Quote:

1) 2 horses you are looking at for todays's FPLR from the horses LAST race.

Horse "A" comes from 21.4 -45.0

Horse "B" comes from 22.2 -44.4

The FPLR is the "A" horse NOT the "B" with the faster 2c time. Remember Hat started all the way to the left side of the pps and the 3 tick faster 1c on the "A" runner more than makes up for the 1 tick edge on the "B".

2) LONGSHOT detector focusing on FPLR:

Find horses who moved forward POSITIONALLY from 1c - 2c in that FPLR then COLLAPSED fininishing well out of the money.

Open the pps up ALL the way on this runner to grap his POWER LINE. If that line projects him against TODAY'S match-up and his running style makes you happy pay close attention as his odds will often be inflated big time due to that last race out of the money finish

Here's a little something Hat showed me a while back.

22.0 - 44.0 - 111.0 9th-9 8th-8 6th-1 1-1

above is a past performance line for a horse's last race. por and his positions/beaten lengths at 4 calls.

Note the very fast 1c and 2c compared to the final time. Hat says this horse did NOT close like it appears.

The rest of the field STOPPED because of the rapid splits early on and this one simply ran by TIRED horses.

He told me to NEVER bet a horse like this when THAT line shown above is the line that makes him "fast" or competitive in today's race. NEVER. Calls him a sucker horse.

Now IF the horse has OTHER lines that make him fast/competitive then those other lines obviously should be the ones considered.

Richie

Quote:

The positioning of the 1 in the last race is 10-7-3 using 1c-2c-sc

ok TODAY the horse can NOT be 10th because TODAY is an EIGHT horse field. This is something Jim taught me and it really is totally cool.

The line I chose has 2 things going for it from a matching "look"

a) LOOK at the break positions he show. See the line I chose? 7th at the break. Right about where he should be in TODAY'S race. Good.

b) the positioning of the race I chose has similar stretch and finish position of the last race: 3-2. I want to make the horse more realistic position wise in TODAY'S MATCHUP so WANT to discount that position 10 stuff from the last race while still keeping a sort of reality of the horse which I think I have now when referring to the break and also stretch and finish positions.

Guys,

Rich is doing great explaining The Match Up. There are steps you must go through to learn the correct way to do the match up and Rich is following the steps as they were taught to him. There is only two
ways a race can run: Early, or other than Early. If a horse can not go wire-to-wire then the race will run other that Early.

Follow Rich’s steps and you will get a grasp of The Match Up. Remember, there are more than one line on most horse’s and all lines should be viewed.

Most individuals worry about adjustments and make adjustments making a slow horse fast, or a fast horse slow. I know many individuals that adjust lines using par times and variants, based on the speed of the track. What a bunch of malarkey. Don’t adjust, view all lines.

Great job Rich.

Just wondering what others "Mind's Eye" that can get us more simple and deeper understanding of THE HAT'S Match Up.

Someone else's perspective can possible give us a view we have not considered or make what we already seen and heard with MORE clarity.

Sort of like looking at something from the top down, the bottom up or inside out, may give one, at least, more crystallization of what has been already taught.

We are NOT looking for tricks, gimmicks, one race wonders, touts, tout methods, tip sheet picks, luck , insider scoop ,clockers tips, "hossey"talk, horse lotto methods, "hossy" gossip or track talk, etc,......,

.....we want YOUR Minds Eye view....., a view that may have not been considered, of consistent solidified Match Up principles that WORK in races day in and day out as taught by
Jim "THE HAT" Bradshaw and Richie P.

Just a theory or wondering..., just like Richie P worked races daily with
THE HAT and got into "his" mind and method, what possible gains if that was done with other successful Match Up students personally tutored by Jim.....?????........could another "Mind's Eye" of a way a certain person perceives could get a little deeper, tad more clarity, different view that does NOT contradict what has been taught that works daily???

Like one guy can read music and the other just plays by ear.

Just speculation, just throwin it out there.

Whatever it takes to gain mastery in THE HAT'S Match Up.

The #1 Rule in the Match UP is that there are no rules.

GUIDELINES:

1) When your tossed early grouping is made up of 2 horses focus your O.T.E. search on fast horses who run well from the 3rd and 4th positions at the 1st call. Use the whole pp's.

2) When your tossed early grouping is made up of 3 horses focus your O.T.E. search on fast horses who run well from the 4th and 5th positions at the 1st call. Use the whole pp's.

3) When your tossed early grouping is made up of 4 horses focus the O.T.E. search on Power Moving horses 1c-2c and 2c-sc who are away POSITIONALLY from the lead horses at the 1st call. Use the whole pp's.

** Power Moves are from 1c-2c and 2c-sc.**

RichieP
**********************************************************

Quote:

a) IF you have multiple early designated contenders (more than 2) do NOT consider for win an O.T.E. who runs from POSITION 2 at the FIRST call. He will be "sucked into" the earlies and killed off. This has been posted about in Hat Check over a year ago.

b) If you have 3 earlies they are taking up 3 POSITIONS when the gate pops. So you want to take for your horse the O.T.E. who sits 4th at the FIRST CALL against today's pace (1 tick or so either way). Look at ALL of this horses pp's. He MUST show the ability to PASS horses on MULTIPLE races . If you find this THAT is the horse you bet. That is your horse.

c) If you can NOT find a horse described in part "b" look for POSITION 5 and 6 horses at the FIRST call against similar 1st c pace. They MUST show a POWER MOVE (passing MORE than 2 horses between calls) from the 1c-2c or 2c-sc to be considered for the win. They MUST show this. If you find this and a horse described in part "b" is not present THIS is your horse.

RichieP
Which looks to me like:

1st call - 2nd call - stretch call

5-3-1 ----- NO

5-5-4 ----- NO

5-2-2 ----- YES passed 3 horses

5-4-1 ----- YES passed 3 horses

Not a rule but a STRONG guideline.

If this is not correct, please correct me, thanks.

How many ways do we have to UNLOCK a race, for it to unfold ?

Looks like our tools mainly centers on : 1st call Pace of Race projection and/or Fastest Pace Last Race.

1) The Minds Eye - needs Early horse(s) - 1st call fraction projection

**********************************************************

2)
Quote:

There are two ways to project the pace

THE HAT
Quote:

First, decide the horse that is likely to take the lead. In picking the horse that is going to take the lead, find a horse that has truly been in the lead at the first call.

THE HAT
Quote:

In the event NONE of the horses definitely had the lead, use a line where a horse tried for the lead or was up close.

THE HAT
Quote:

Next, find a horse that was in the lead at the 2nd call.

THE HAT
Quote:

Next, find a final time that MATCHES the first two calls, and you have the projected pace of today's race.

THE HAT
Quote:

NEVER add beaten lengths to any of the fractional calls.

THE HAT

Quote:

3) Find the horse that has run the best against the fastest pace in his last race,at today's track and at today's distance.

THE HAT

Quote:

If none of the horse's has run at todays distance consider any fast sprint, or any fast route line.

THE HAT
**********************************************************

3) PACE-LESS RACE 1

Quote:

The race Rich has posted is a "pace-less" race. A race that does not have an Early horse. When I approach this type of race I do not worry about who will take the lead, but the running lines of horse that have run against the fastest pace. Remember, I do not worry about the last race, but the "power" lines of the horses. I always look at the last race, but do not limit myself to using it.

THE HAT
Quote:

".....have run against the fastest first fraction and the fastest second call. So, these are the running lines we zeroed in on.

THE HAT

4) PACE-LESS RACE 2

Quote:

Races where none of the horses had the lead or close at any call is a pace-less race. It is impossible to project the pace from this type race.

Follow these steps in matching the pace-less race:

1) If possible use a race run against the fastest pace at today's distance or a similar distance.

2) If possible use the last race at today's track and distance.

3) Ignore all beaten lengths and use last race when possible.

4) This race is the projected pace for today's race.

--from The Match Up (blue book) Jim "THE HAT" Bradshaw

**********************************************************

5) FASTEST PACE LAST RACE

Quote:

When you FIRST open a race scroll the horses and find the fastest PACE OF RACE from the LAST RACE. Look at the horse(s) and check the position and beaten lenghts at 1c AND 2c. If the horse maintains position and/or beaten lenghts (NOT talking about pos 8-8 for ex, some looking at races like this will show YOU what is ok) this is a TRIGGER to open the horse's WHOLE pp's up and evaluate him off BEST line (s).

RichieP
Quote:

When a horse loses BOTH position and beaten lenghts between the 1st and 2nd calls this is a strong indication THAT pace is one he can NOT handle. If he GAINS position or beaten lenghts from 1c to 2c use this as a positive indicator that he can handle the pace.

Primer FPLR
In EVERY race you look at:
1) Identify the FPLR
2) Note the POSITIONAL running style or styles (if there is a tandem for FPLR)

Now QUICKLY notice
1) Was there fighting going on?

2) Did the horse try to WIN the race at the stretch call with a Power Move and failed losing both positions/beaten lengths sc-finish?

3) Was there a maintaining of POSITIONS and or beaten lengths from 1c-2c?

The above 3 are GOOD. That is all you need to tell yourself when you see it.
Now you move on QUICKLY.
==================================================

1) Did the horse or horses from FPLR LOSE positions AND beaten lengths 1c-2c??

This is BAD and that's all you need to know. Move on QUICKLY.

Practice this EVERY race you work from the time you read this onward.
use your Mind's Eye here to ONLY identify and store.

VoodooFan 08-15-2010 07:30 PM

So once we "UNLOCK" the race, and WIN the race, there is a PATTERN there that has happened "before", many times.

So once we WIN the race, do we recognize what PATTERN it was?

Was it a LONE Early, Dominant Early, Clear-Clear Early, Multiple Earlies, Multiple Sprinters in a Route, etc.,?

We IDENTIFY the PATTERN or have identi-FIED the PATTERN and WON the race.

Now what???

Quote:

The "Hat's" matchup is NOT
projecting pace
running styles
spot plays
etc.etc.

HIS matchup is all about the MIND and RECALLING patterns/races that have run before

RichieP
Quote:

".... I was talking with him when all of a sudden he tells me "Rich don't go crazy after I tell you this ok? I do NOT pay attention to tandems. I do NOT project a pace. When I am "ON" I open the form and there is the winner of the race. Try it sometime and see".

RichieP quoting THE HAT
Quote:

"The race has run already even though it hasn't. Now just find the horse that has already won".

RichieP quoting THE HAT

Quote:

" Intuition is pattern recognition. Relax and open your mind to recognize certain races that have run before. Then go to the pp's and find the horse that has already won based on what has happened BEFORE" - The Hat
Quote:

It's PATTERN RECOGNITION at a very high level.

When we look at a race it is something that HAS run before. Many many times as a matter of fact. Things change such as
names
tracks
distances
surfaces
but the CORE of the race is the same.

What we CAN do as beginning "matchers" is to be aware of one or two certain types of races that we HAVE seen run and KNOW who the winner "looks like" in the pp's BEFORE the race runs. We can FOCUS on finding these type races to wager on.

This is where Jim's SPOT PLAYS become a SERIOUS weapon for us to use if we have PATIENCE and DISCIPLINE to wait on them.

He tells me "Rich focus on the races that you RECOGNIZE. As you gain more experience with the matchup you will be able to recognize more races to bet on. Take things one step at a time and realize you are doing this for 8 months while I am at it for over 20 YEARS."

RichieP
Richie suggested KEEPING those WINNING races, keeping an amount to users preference, of RECOGNIZABLE PATTERNS, WINNING PATTERNS that we have Won, Seen, and can "SEE".

He also suggested we refer to them , often, get that Pattern "SET" in our mind.

I think he said use them like a "Flashcards" of sorts, different winning patterns that we can easily recognize, get them ingrained in the mind.

Richie has a lot of "Hat Helpers' and Step-by-Step Pattern Recognition exercises/drills given to him by THE HAT of different WINNING Patterns that recur over and over again.

We want to get as close to "HAT" like ability as possible.

We want to evolve and get better like THE HAT has done.

I did not try this, as Richie suggested, because I could only see some value in it and so me logic ( or lack thereof) went something like this:

"Sure, one could recognize a winning pattern in ones novice state.., but how would one advance and push the envelope of higher stages if all I am "looking" for and "waiting" for is the easy stuff I can already see???"

"How can this exercise help me win and recognize MORE advanced and complex races thats within the SAME winning pattern category, by looking and waiting for races I already see??"

"I pass hard races and wait for the one's I see in my novice state?? How can this make one advance?"

DUDE, IT'S RIGHT THERE, how many times does Richie got to type it?!?!??!?

CAN'T see the forest for the trees.

How often we forget how D-E-E-E-E-P and plentiful the tools we have here in The Sartin Methodology and The Match Up??

Simply do as Richie said as taught to him by THE HAT.

Keep the winning race you won, identify the pattern, Lone Early, Chaos, Marathon, etc., and refer to it often to put you in the zone more and more..., ...BUT

Either with Richie's template of Step-by-Step Pattern Recognition exercises of SPECIFIC winning patterns or consulting his personal help, simply SUBSTITUTE the race you won with the lesson he presented, and without fail, go thru the steps of YOUR winning race as he did HIS, Hat Helpers and all, and do EXACTLY as instructed, like this example :

http://paceandcap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4497

Find different PATTERNS and lessons with THIS Step-by-Step approach by Richie.....,

....BUT HERE IS THE CATCH :

Of the races you WON of a particular pattern, if a recent race was a little tougher, harder, complex, murkier, SUBSTITUTE THAT race in place of your PREVIOUS race.

That means, you may have to pick one or two races in card that are not necessarily easy to recognize, NOT HARD, but not AS easy as you normally would handicap your other races.

These one or two races should be $2 bet races. Maybe do this once a month or whenever you feel your pattern recognition skills "seeing" these murky, tough races is getting easier and easier, and you need slightly more intense one's to replace the previous flashcard.

You need to add SLIGHTLY more difficult races to your portfolio of winning patterns for you to go over when you need to get in the zone, solidify them in your mind or simply practice of repetition so they can be more "automatic" when you open the form, like THE HAT.

Remember Richies "HAT" quotes on how EXTREMELY focused and relaxed THE HAT is.

Richies step by step drills going over YOUR winning races should get us even more closer, with this added twist, in my humble opinion, we got more to shoot for.

HOW many times does Richie got to hammer intuition and pattern recognition?

Which is why I mis-INTERPRETED this:

Quote:

When checking running styles I find a lone Early, but there isn’t any line showing where the horse won the race, but his first two calls indicate that he is a very fast horse and will get the lead in today’s race. This is the horse I pick to win the race.

If I believe the race will go other than Early I may pick another horse with a different running style and try to find a running line for this horse. So in reality I’m picking horse’s running styles and then find running lines that will make the horse the winner.

In most instances I do not know the horse's name, or the track where he last ran. The horse that is going to take the lead is the first thing I look for in today’s race and nothing else matters. I do not apply any
traditional handicapping methods..

THE HAT
He was NOT talking about 1st fraction projection of lead horse.

He was NOT talking about finding the EARLY horse.

He simply opened the form, IMMEDIATELY recognized the "race that has run before" , FOUND the winning horse because another horse with a different name just like him won before, then proceeded to find a line to make the horse the winner or verify that THIS is the horse.

And here I thought that the first thing was to find an Early horse.

Spare no expense to make your winning pattern portfolio fun, nice, nice to touch and pick up, easy to look at, fun to look at, easy to carry and thumb thru, book form , folder, hardbound diary, etc., because you will be looking at it often, sharpening your "HAT" vision.

If you only focus on what Richie says in the exercises to do to YOUR winning races, and the races you get get slightly harder and more difficult in a gradual way, pretty soon, you will ONLY see what you need to "see"..., there will be no such thing as hard, murky, difficult, noisy races because you will have trained yourself to block out the stuff which makes us perceive a race as difficult.

Can you see the potential in this, right here in front of our face?

THE HAT did several things in his stage, that I know of, evolving and perfecting The Match Up:

He made hundreds, if not, thousands of graphs.

Then latter, he simply observed horses and there behavior.

What will be "OUR" evolving tool if we can ever get close to the instant pattern recognition level?

It is easy to see in the Pattern Recognition exercise drills that Richie provided, on how SPECIFIC and deliberate he tells us what to "look" at, we can now understand more when Jim lectured on a tape somewhere , this is why THE HAT stated something to the effect:

"...my eye's REFUSE TO SEE the Beyers numbers.., my eye's REFUSE TO SEE the class..., my eye's REFUSE TO SEE the post position..,

Perhaps one day, "our" eye's REFUSE TO SEE anything except the winning horse, so if we "refuse" to see the "stuff" that is unnecessary, how would we know if a race is difficult, advanced or too hard?

This is The Sartin Methodology.

This is The Match Up.

This is legacy of Dr. Howard G. Sartin and Jim "THE HAT" Bradshaw.

Richie , Ted and others has been faithful in this legacy of information.

We will never get to the bottom of our tool chest, and anything else in the marketplace now or in the future simply cannot compare.

Believe me, I tried to find, and bought, other stuff in an attempt to get a clearer perspective of The Match Up and The Sartin Methodology.

The closest thing was Tom Brohamer's book, so him being a Pirco Charter Teaching member, that really did'nt count.

The other was a sentence or two in Sal Sinatra's book, who was also a Sartin Methodologist, so technically, that don't count either.

Even read some of ex-Sartin members books, sorry, not close.

People's , we simply got to sharpen our shovels when digging in this vast tool chest is all.

Pace handicapping begins with the gate opening. If a horse is to win "early" he doesn't get to wait until the second call to be early. I think not only the first call, but the start call in many sprint races is very important. Sometimes the first call is too late to be early.

I was delighted to see you talk about being on the lead at the 1C, because Jim was once answering a question I had about the match up. I was arguing a line where the horse was 2-hd to try to make him the leader, and Jim said, rather bluntly, "Well, second ain't on the lead, now is it?"

Tom

Quote:

Learn from my mistakes.

1) Make sure that when you are projecting a pace 1c-2c that you are using a horse (s) who are ON THE LEAD at those calls. NOT 2-hd or 2-nk.

Quote:

"Rich work on getting the importance of the FIRST CALL in people's minds. Get them away from the "pace is 2c bull****". When you think you have done enough in this area do some MORE ok? This is the matchup" - Jim Bradshaw (notes to me on 11/11/2007)

Quote:

The SOLE purpose of this thread and SPECIFIC race was to EXPOSE developing matchers "Mind's Eye" to the "Voodoo Process" described in post #42 and the realities shown in post #54.

Remember "flash cards" in school? Where we saw something real quick like then it was gone?

Exact same idea here Pete and the flash card analogy was Hat's description to me.

It then becomes simply a matter of PERSONAL choices where to continue with this:
1) Quit

2) Rely on the 5 step approach and "Matchup2" and a strict numbers based approach

3) Become VERY uncomfortable at first and work on the Mind's Eye
and it is all GOOD.

RichieP

So now , when we do the step-by-step process of The Minds Eye and Pattern Recognition exercises, the DISCIPLINE to DO IT and do so consistently is more possible, now that we can see further into its final purpose.....,

....to TRAIN the EYE to go directly to whats needed, which in turn, TRAINS the Brain and Subconscious to faster and faster recognize more Winning horses and/or Patterns that have occurred before, INSTANTLY, at more and more of a GLANCE, NOT thinking, automatic, win, lose or draw.

By training the eye to go ONLY to the essential, we will began to develop a REFLEX action, blocking all other unimportant information, automatically, unless our GLANCE instantly tell us to automatically look there once in a while, intuition.

This becomes more doable.

Eye's NO LONGER WANDERING to who sired the horse, who trains the horse, the varients , to post position, to blinkers, to dosage, or any other "stuff".

With practice and skill, we may no longer even notice if it is a hard or more complex race, because we will be looking at NOTHING else.

May have misspoke.

Pattern Recognition drills are probably a little different than referring to races ALREADY WON to "remember" looks faster and faster.

But still have to selectively KNOW what to look at and FOCUS ON in isolation, and how to "SET UP" your won race as in color highlights of the winning horse past performance line(s), break calls, 1st call positions, running styles, SPECIFIC things to look at to go over and over to remember and recall "looks" faster and faster.

Richie will probably have to tell us how to set up our winning race so we can look at it and remember the "look" and the "what" of what we are supposed to focus on {only}.

Here are 3 races won :

http://paceandcap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3063

So now the question is what are looking at for it to "imprint" on our mind?

My debate is it is necessary to look selectively at specifics first, before ones eyes automatically can just simply scan the Racing Form race of the winning race and it becomes more and more recognizable, faster.

Like The 5 Step Approach, Minds Eye, projecting the pace, running styles, tandems, etc., are things that have to be constantly practiced to attain a level of proficiency before you can see more and more automatically and begin the next level of pattern recognition.

Some people can just simply shoot the basketball anywhere on the floor while others have to master a spot or distance from the basket shooting hundreds , if not thousands of shots to attain what others with the very short learning curve can do readily.

For instance, lets say we won and saved two or three races under the Lone Early category.

So , what factors or winning factors do we highlight so our eyes go there at a glance?

Is it:

Fastest 1st fraction projection ?

Normal break positions from the 1st fraction projection ?

Comfort lead at the 1st call ?

Specifc Comfort lead for "this" particular horse thru out the race ?

Does this Early need minimum Comfort lead in the stretch ?

Fighting ability ?

Ability to Power Move on the lead ?

Ability to Power Move from gate to 1st call at particular fractions ?

Ability to Power Move AFTER fighting ?

Other than Early ability to win ?

Other than Early ability to fight ?

The only Lead horse in the race ?

Or is the fastest 1st fraction Early's Minds Eye "all" we need ?

Other patterns like Chaos race, Other Than Early may require different things to look at and highlight.

But before we can start recalling past performances of races won under a Pattern category, we have to 1st win enough of these different type Match Up races.

Voodoo:

Enjoyng the posts, but in this post you seem to focus on attributes of Early races and or horses. The only quibble I have is that the three races won reference at the top is to Other Than Early races.

Just thought that the race info imprint would have included races closer to your subject matter.

Printed most of this thread and the various reference material and read it two or three times on the plane to Delmar last weekend. Very good refresher and it helped in many cases.

thanks for the effort,

Bill

Just thinking out loud and publicly reorganizing study notes is all.

The thanks is owed to those that were quoted, but your nice words are appreciated.

In reference to me focusing on Early horses, that was just an example.

Lone Early, Other Than Early, 3 matching Earlies, Chaos races, Marathon Races probably have "some" similar patterns, but my thought and query, correct or incorrect is that each one has a "look" or "trigger" unique to that pattern.

Although I think saving won races under various pattern categories to recognize them more and more, faster, is getting into the advanced stage for most.

Lets say you saved two or more won races from certain patterns and let's say the "pattern" that is not readily seen is the very 1st square, a "spiral" pattern :

Lone Early pattern or look :

http://www1.math.american.edu/People...esummer04.html

Multiple Sprinters in a Route (Other-Than-Early) pattern or look :

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...w=1024&bih=653

As novice Matcher's , in the murky, jungle, confusion of the Past Performance of the Racing Form, we cannot readily "see" these patterns , to see what has occurred "before", to see the "same" horse, different name.

We would like to advance to simply open the Racing Form and see the pattern as clearly and distinctly as we can see and know the difference as the above two examples.

I think to advance to even approaching THE HAT stage, these patterns almost have to literally STAB you in the eye when you first open the form and look at the race.

What steps it takes to start, I am unsure.

So we KNOW what DOESN'T "stab" THE HAT in the eye, because he said it on tape..., :

Quote:

"...my eye's REFUSE TO SEE the Beyers numbers.., my eye's REFUSE TO SEE the class..., my eye's REFUSE TO SEE the post position.., "

THE HAT
That means he is purposefully blocking out anything that does NOT tell him who WON before.

On page 87 of The Beginners Manual, THE HAT goes over The Match Up, there were some things purposefully EXCLUDED/WHITED-OUT in the past performance race he was going over.

This, is perhaps, a clue to the template we need to create for saved won races for particular pattern recognition drills, in combination with something like this :

or

RichieP

This could mean that THE HAT is selectively looking at triggers/patterns, { Lasering-In } on particulars.

What he is ZEROING in on , specifically, holistically, at a glance, is telling him the type of horse that is needed to win this race that has run before.

"...there he is..., "

"....this same horse won this same or close to exact type of race.., "

".....his name has changed...,"

"....I remember this race, it has ran 100's of times before...,"

Like finding Waldo , here's the "jumble" of data, the Past Performance.., where is "our" horse ( Waldo ) that won this race before :

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...ed=0CC0Q9QEwBA

Or let's say the "flag" is Other-Than-Early horse, where is he in this Past Performance:

http://www.highlightskids.com/Gamesa...5.swf&varsIn=2

Ok, maybe it is not quite like these examples, but you get the idea, it has some parallels.

A very advanced stage of The Match UP.

This is the process of Matching running styles, or matching E, P, & S's in the Match up:

1. Horse A is an Early Runner
2. Horse B is an Early Runner
3. Horse C is a Presser
4. Horse D is a Sustained Runner

Now, which horse will take the lead? If Horse A takes the lead, Horse B is unable to obtain the lead, but will press for the lead.

This would make B an Early Presser.

Horse C is a Late Presser, and Horse D is a Sustained Runner.

The Match Up does alter the running style of the horses, and learning to identify the running styles correctly is crucial in learning the Match Up.

The following chart illustrates the procedure used in matching the running styles and how the Match up can alter these styles.

Early A------ 21.4---- 44.1---- 109---- 1hd ---- 1hd---- 1no---- 1hd
Early B------ 22.1---- 45.2---- 109.4-- 1hd-----1no-----1nk-----1hd
Presser C----22.2---- 44.4---- 109.3-- 2nk----- 2nk----2hd----- 3hd
Sustained D- 22------ 45------ 109.4-- 68 ------54-----42------ 2hd

The following questions should be asked in matching E, P, & S's, to decide how the race matches up.

1. Can Early A go wire o wire, or will Early B force him to run faster tp gain the lead?

2. If Early A is the Lone Early horse in the race, can he extend his energy the distance of the race?

3. Does's Early B's past performance show that he can win as a Presser?

4. Will Horse C or D, best benefit from the Match Up?

Jim "THE HAT" Bradshaw, from The Match Up (blue book)

Quote:

c) If you can NOT find a horse described in part "b" look for POSITION 5 and 6 horses at the FIRST call against similar 1st c pace. They MUST show a POWER MOVE (passing MORE than 2 horses between calls) from the 1c-2c or 2c-sc to be considered for the win. They MUST show this. If you find this and a horse described in part "b" is not present THIS is your horse.

RichieP
1st call - 2nd call - stretch call

5-3-1 ----- NO

5-5-3 ----- NO

Not a rule, but a strong guideline.

{Possibility} : Altered running style because of not matching: pace of race, power move, MOVED out of 1st call position due to better Sustained horses.

So now this horse is either non-contender or is considered a Late-Late horse.

But if there is are better Sustained horses, faster with better powermoves, more likely NON-contender than Late. He will be behind the better Sustained horses.

Can he win as a Late horse?

Quote:

There are also Late-Late Runners - Horses that a far behind the Sustained horse and make a late surge to pass all horses in front of them.

We need to make sure we have THOROUGHLY evaluated ALL the Early horses so as to determine "EARLY or OTHER-THAN-EARLY".

Quote:

LONE EARLY -- A lone Early horse that can extend his energy the FULL DISTANCE OF TODAY'S race. Take a look at the 3rd fraction to make this decision. Look for horses that DO NOT appear to be Early runners, especially in their last race.

HIDDEN EARLY -- an Early horse headed in the 1st or 2nd call, especially in their last race at todays distance. This horse may be a Presser that tried to run Early in their last race at todays distance.

BEATEN EARLY -- An Early horse headed at the 1st call or 2nd call in their last race, but in their past performance shows they can go wire to wire . Make sure they can get a clear lead in todays race.

LONE EARLY "look" :

"HIDDEN" EARLY :

"EARLY" OR "OTHER-THAN-EARLY"?

Quote:

If an EARLY , or EARLY PRESSER can not win the race the race "set" up too run
OTHER-THAN-EARLY.

THE HAT
Are we forgetting WHAT is Early and missing these horses?

Have we evaluated ALL the Early horses in the race?

We are all looking, and usually the first thing, is to find a LONE EARLY, THE HAT'S Mind's Eye drill has trained us to instinctively look for that like an involuntary reflex action and "Little Cap" kept on reminding us with examples.

But let's not forget ALL the Earlies.....,

LONE EARLY PRESSER :

Quote:

"Take a look at the running style of the horses and ask yourself, can an Early horse get the lead and go wire-to-wire?"

"My answer is yes."

"Mynavigator is the ONLY EARLY PRESSER in the race."

"The others are all Sustained, except Super Reviewer a Sustained Presser. These horses are eliminated."

"The race is setting up to run EARLY, remember a
LONE EARLY PRESSER
is THE SAME as a LONE EARLY".

"Mynavigator can go wire-to-wire in this race."

"Early or Other-Than-Early?"

How many times does this have to be repeated?

Probably a million more and then some since we have yet/need to master the clarity and winning of and with The Match Up, "HAT" style.

We have to KNOW how the race is going to run, so we can KNOW what type of horse we are looking for.

We HAVE to KNOW what "EARLY" is and means, and what "OTHER-THAN-EARLY" is and means, without question.

As always, let's go to " THE HAT " for clarity and clarification, since he told Rich most races run
Other-Than-Early, let's focus on the DEFINITIVE definition of [one] "type" of Other-Than-Early race, a race that usually gives us fits and makes us unsure of our abilities :

* * * PACE-LESS RACE * * *

Quote:

" The race Rich has posted is a "PACE-LESS" race. A race that does NOT HAVE AN EARLY HORSE."

THE HAT

Quote:

" NONE of the horses in this race are EARLY horses. In their past performances, SOME of the horses have GONE FOR THE LEAD, but their first calls are extremely slow."

" This race is CLASSIFIED as a PACE-LESS race, but someone must take the lead, in a PACE-LESS race look for an EARLY PRESSER as the horse most likely to take the lead."

THE HAT

Ok , so by THE HAT'S above quotes, it is now easier than ever to spot and identify what type of race we are looking at and what type of horse we are looking for , especially if we ASK THESE questions and now can be easily answered :

**
Quote:

Is there a " PURE " EARLY horse?

RichieP

* *
Quote:

".........no established pace from an EARLY horse."

RichieP

* *
Quote:

"In all honesty I can't even project the time in this race."

shoeless

By what has been written, there are 3 ways a race "sets up" to run Other-Than-Early:

1) NEED-TO-LEAD/PURE EARLY horse(s) who collapse either on their own or by killing themselves off fighting for the lead with other Need-to-Lead horses. That may mean also no LONE EARLY, HIDDEN EARLY, BEATEN EARLY.

2) PACE-LESS race ----> a} a race without a PURE EARLY horse, NEED-TO-LEAD only.

3} PACE-LESS race-----> b} a race in which NO HORSE in ALL TEN past performance lines has EVER taken the LEAD at the first call, CHAOS race.

So...,

1) Determine "Early or Other-Than-Early" by the above definitions and questions, "PURE" Early horse/NEED-TO-LEAD , which is why one of the 1st things THE HAT does is this:

http://paceandcap.com/forums/showpos...00&postcount=2

2) Determine what TYPE of OTHER-THAN-EARLY race, so as to zero-in on the type of horse we are looking for.

3) Next, use this quote to make sure we are evaluating the type of horse we are looking for :

Quote:

"..........determining that the race would run OTHER-THAN-EARLY is the key in winning the race."

" Next, find the FASTEST Other-Than-Early horse, NEVER rely on ONE RUNNING LINE to find this horse"

THE HAT

4)

Quote:

"....... NEVER rely on ONE RUNNING LINE to find this horse"

THE HAT

5)

Quote:

"....... NEVER rely on ONE RUNNING LINE to >find< this horse"

THE HAT

6)

Quote:

"....... NEVER rely on ONE RUNNING LINE to >find< this horse"

THE HAT

7)

Quote:

"....... NEVER rely on ONE RUNNING LINE to >find< this horse"

THE HAT

So here is the best thread , using THE HAT method, for PROJECTING and going thru PACE-LESS races:

http://paceandcap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3689

So it is easier than ever and quicker to know what type of race we are looking at and the type of horse we are looking for.

Now, we can better put together the tools of Fastest Pace Last Race, Voodoo Handicapping, Minds Eye , Running styles, Power LInes, Power Moves to more efficient use.

Jesus Christ, am I the only one digging into THE HAT'S Match Up here, meticulously analyzing for better clarification or are more interested in "tout" review of races, "playing" the tout, gimmicks, or are you keeping it to yourself?

RichieP excluded, notice most, if not all, of the personally-taught students of THE HAT keep silient and keep their level clarity to themselves.

Not counting the "celebrities, "experts" or "name-brand" ""handicappers"" that SHAMELESSLY for years steal from The Sartin Methodology without giving Howard/Bradshaw and company ANY credit of worth or worthy mention so as to keep up their reputation, fan following and ego.

Very few, if any, seem to talk or get into the Factor Analysis about THE HAT way of attacking a race and its study, attempting to master The Match Up, most like talking "crowd" talk or classic "hossy" paradigms that they can't take to the window EVERYDAY and cash a ticket on.

That even goes , to some extent, those attempting to master The Sartin Methodology.

You know, I got 22 or so tapes witH THE HAT lecturing anywhere from 3 to 30 minutes lecturing and giving examples on The Match Up, and at least 7 follow-along past performance races to follow.

I made 2 copies, one for THE HAT who wrote to me that he is amazed the things he is saying now is what he said 20 years ago..,

...and one to someone else who I got no response to..., those tapes, along with the 3 Match Up books and HAT CHECK are responsible for the little clarity I have, I'm probably the only one that gets excited to hear THE HAT lecture....,

....then there's one Sartin Seminar I let out to borrow , never got it back, probably lost, and it has been so long, I forgot what seminar it was.

Not too encouraging with all this stuff, but thats life, man.

Hi Voodoo-

If someone can post up the PP's to race 2 at Santa Anita today (2/26), it fits the #3 description of a paceless race.

Maybe someone can take a crack at deciphering this one. I learned to identify the horse closest to the early pace as the likely pacestter and throw him out because he will be out of position today. Then, consider the race to run OTE and match the remaining horses. Honestly, I couldn't project a horse in this race to be my "lead" horse to throw out, except maybe the router (#3).

Pete
