Hi Jeff. I use his failure guidelines in Chap 10 his book Winning At The Races. He details the difference between a bad race and a failure[a lot of people tend to think a bad race in the last dooms the horse]. And yes I generally downgrade a horse which has a failure in its' last race[ in some races every contender has some kind defect and then I leave the tier rank stand]. It is important to read the conditions of the race. For example the 4 in race 2 last 2 races were for $12,500 but look carefully and you will see that 2 back was a condition n2l race while the last was for open company. That would make a the difference in charging the horse with a failure or not. For instance 2 back it finished 2nd. If the last race was also a 12,500 n2l it would have considered a failure because it did not accomplish what it had done 2 back if it didn't have the trouble excuse.
