They’re closing Aqueduct because New York racing is being consolidated at the rebuilt Belmont Park. NYRA and the state are turning Belmont into the year-round downstate racing hub, with the modernized facility expected to take over the racing dates Aqueduct used to carry. So this is not really about Aqueduct failing as a racetrack. It is about Belmont becoming the main operation and NYRA no longer needing two major downstate tracks splitting resources.

The other part is the land. Aqueduct sits on valuable Queens property, and once racing moves to Belmont, that land becomes available for redevelopment. So the Big A is basically being sacrificed for a modern Belmont and a big real-estate opportunity. For horseplayers, it stings because Aqueduct is an old-school winter grinder’s track, but from the business side, they see one rebuilt Belmont as cleaner, newer, and more profitable than keeping both tracks alive.
