Consistently Wrong

Consistently wrong; I believe that is a fair characterization of management in most areas of horse racing.

Remember the $5.00 exata at the West coast tracks. According to management it was to protect the bettors from themselves. Memory is a little weak on this one, it either took a boycott, or just the threat, for management to see the light and revert, or introduce, the $2.00 exata; the industry standard. That was followed by the $1.00 exata; as handle increased, protecting the bettor became less and less a concern. And now we have .10 cent Superfecta. They've come a long way.

However, the most "assinine" award statement by a management executive goes to Charles Cella, CEO at Oaklawn Park. In a general discussion with a DRF reporter regarding the state of racing in Arkansas, the comment that will for ever enshrine him in my own personal pantheon of fools is his statement: "we don't emphasize wagering here at Oaklawn Park." Of course we were left to guess what it is they do emphasize? The improvement of the breed? Can we expect to see an Arky Bred in the triple crown chase? In fairness to Mr. Cella he too has seen the light, and Oaklawn Park now offers a gimmick bet. Believe it's called instant racing.

It never stops, it goes on and on and on. Without a national governing body to rien them in, they're all free to bounce around in their own orbit. The only thing that gets their attention is MONEY. They missed it the first time around with simulcasting, so they're hell bent on catching up. Watch out.

A boycott may be the answer. I don't see anyone on the horizon who has the wherewithal or inclination to organize one! That's enough for now, didn't think I had that much in me.

Chirs
