Most likely the issue is that the installer is not compatible with Vista. I am not sure if DOSBOX would help with the issue or not as it isn't really a DOS issue (as the software is Windows software).
XP has a compatibility mode, if Vista also has a compatibility mode you might try installing using that mode (I do not have Vista (actually I use Mac nowadays) so I cannot check on this for you). If someone here has Vista they may be able to check on compatibility mode.
