Good points. And speaking of 7f here's a tip. Horses cutting back from 8.5f to 7f seem to do better than they should. In other words they win more than their fair share of races. I don't know if this is true and I have absolutely nothing to back it up. Chalk it up to a seat-of-the-pants observation which may or may not be valid.
