I set up a spreadsheet with columns for date-horse-race and the factors that comprise the primary line score on the BL tab, plus the BL score itself. These read from left-to-right in the same order as in RDSS. I also add the mutuel to the right of that.
After each race, I add another line of data.
Below the lines described, I have tally columns. Thus I know from the races that I've handicapped at Saratoga that of the six races I have that are 6 furlongs, five of them have been won by a horse that ranked first, second or third in EPR. Four of them were horses ranked first or second.
I do this for each column and it takes me no more than a minute per race. I have an excellent memory and can read and memorize all necessary numerals in a row in one glance at the BL tab.
For me it's more than just transposing numbers from one program to another - it's an observational and decision making process at the same time. I'm interpreting the data as I'm inputting it. This procedure comes from 30 years of dealing with Neilsen TV ratings data - I'm a statistician by trade.
I'll attach the spreadsheet file here, it should be self-explanatory. The way it's designed and labeled may cause some confusion, but this was never intended for public consumption so you'll have to excuse that.When you see the name of a horse in italicized-bold type, that's a winning wager.
If you (or anyone else) want to use it, fine - but I'm a spot player and I've only set up the pages for the distances that I've handicapped so far and the races that interested me. Any additional surfaces or distances desired will have to be added by the user. All I have so far are 6F and 9F races on dirt. I'll get to the turf when I'm satisfied that the course is dry.
