Technically, the ESP is generated from %Median ranges, which is F1+F1 velocity divided by Total Energy (which is F1+F2+F3 velocities). Check the Velocity screen right-hand side where the %velocities are placed side by side with the %Median number and the resulting ESP designation. If you take a couple dozen of these ranges (i.e. for a couple dozen random PP lines) and put %Median in one column and the ESP label in another, you will start to see the minimum and maximum ends of the range of %Median covered by each ESP label.
It could also be done by mapping the E/L number, which uses a point value for 2nd call energy (EPR), which could then be expressed as percentage of CPR (or TPR). You would get about the same ratio as %Median, and thus about the same range values for the ESP energy disbursement ratio as we have historically used based on velocity, rather than a point formula.
There's only so many alternate ways to slice and dice 6 raw numbers of time and beaten lengths

The one nuance of difference between %Median using F1+F2 velocity and using EPR (based on 2nd call time) is that EPR is a bit 'coarser', being an average velocity or time taken to the 2nd call, where F1+F1 measures time in the first fraction as well as time in the 2nd fraction, and thus is a bit more refined. A horse could have a monster F1 and a terrible F2 and still have the best 2nd Call time due to that big F1. But when combining its F1 plus its F2, the effect of the poorer F2 might reduce the otherwise good looking 2nd call number. Most times, however, the 2 systems would produce the same ratios (ratio of Early in first 2 fractions to overall Energy).
