Pace Makes the Race / TPR Ratings / Phase I -- An Introduction

This is a Forum of discussions on the subset of the Sartin Methodology described in the book 'Pace Makes the Race, An Introduction to the Sartin Methodology', by Tom Hambleton, Dick Schmidt, Michael Pizzolla and Dr Howard Sartin. Sartin referred to this approach as Advanced Phase I. They are also known as Total Pace Ratings or TPR ratings, and are discussed extensively in the Follow Ups.

Some people are not aware that Pace Makes the Race, or the 'TPR' ratings are about the Sartin Methodology, but they are! They continue to be an integral part of the Methodology today, even if their original effectiveness from 25 years ago no longer serves as a stand-alone method to get the better prices mutuels we require to stay ahead of the game.

They are a core component of RDSS, with their own Screen - the TPR + Early/Late Differential screen, computed exactly the same way as described in the original book (but using modern Daily- and Inter-Track adjustments and distance/surface equalizations). Today, we need further tools to make these ratings effective, such as an analysis of the Matchup of running styles in a race, and horse form cycles. In RDSS, we augment the EPR, LPR and CPR (or TPR) ratings with Early versus Late energy disbursement analysis, and other race segmental factors to create the Bottom Line/Betting Line (BL/BL) and then V/DC - which creates RDSS' primary Odds Line.

The examples in this Forum will help people learn to make use of these Ratings for identifying Contenders and selecting Win and other wagers.

Our primary teacher and Forum band-leader will be Bill V. Take it away Bill!
