Ego races

One of my wagering mentors, a real estate sales manager whom I met at
the harness races, gave me a real good object lesson as regards
parimutuels that has stuck with me these many years since his passing.
In essence: find a race that pays you to wager on it, not one you can
brag about because it had made the front pages of the sports section.
He pointed out, rationally, that most people need to stroke their ego
by touting how they won the Kentucky Derby or, a germane topic for
this week, a Breeder's Cup race. He went on to rationally state: THOSE
races have so many good, well-meant horses that to objectively make
money in the long term is a very difficult task AND you are up against
some of the strongest competition out there :i.e. the Sheet palyers,
Thorograph, etc.

This fellow was the one who pointed me to the smaller markets where
you are competing against bored housewives, retired folks etc., who
don't have the tools to effectively figure out the races. UNLESS you
find a big advanatge in these bigger pools (I think I have bet the
Breeder's Cup about four times with horses that were OVERLAYS relative
to how much of an advantage they had over their fields like
Precisionist, Manila, Quija Board and a few junvenile winners), it is
best to enjoy them for what they were designed to do: select champions
from the best of the best.

Good luck as I will be looking at Woodbine, Fort Erie and Hastings
this weekend.
