Some memories of Rich (Mum and I always called him Dick) -
5 or 6 years ago, Rich, Eric Penicka (see Follow Up #85) and I (can't remember if Bill Varone and Bill Lyster were also involved) were conducting extensive modeling on several sets of factors to see if we could assemble an ultimately high-volume betting syndicate. Rich contributed a forerunner of what became his '4 Factor method' and Eric and I contributed several other impactful factors (VDC, CSR, CR+, TSF3+). After a while, we set that project aside but it lead directly to the Rx-n series of factors, bringing together the best of the Sartin factors with some other non-correlated factors.
Rx3 has its roots in work that Rich contributed, and I am grateful to him for that.
After the 1st 2 videos I made interviewing handicappers this Spring (before I moved west), Rich was going to be the next one. We did a test for an hour or so but his internet connection was so bad it was not going to be viable. He promised a better connection this Autumn, but I'm sorry we never got around to making that video for posterity. (I hope to continue this series soon.)
In 2019, Rich wanted to attend the Saratoga get together but was having a hard time getting it all funded. We managed to move some resources around, he shared a room with a generous attendee, and so he got to finally meet many of us in person, some again for the first time in 30 years. He gave a great presentation of his method in our Friday night seminar (which I wish we had recorded) and spent a lot of the time together during the day giving advice to whomever asked.
Whenever we had to talk, even if it was just to clarify a single item, I knew I had to set aside an hour
. I was (usually) happy to do it and truly learned a lot from him.
These anecdotal memories remind me of memories I have from Doc, Jim Bradshaw and Guy Wadsworth - just random stuff, but usually demonstrating their uniqueness and generosity of spirit. I'll not forget Rich soon.
