I do something slightly different. My program generates a file for the top 4 finishers in each race, indicating the lengths behind at the first two calls. (Obviously, I could also easily add positions to these.) This gives me a good look at how the track is playing, as I can see how far back the winners are coming from (as well as how gapped the races are). Of course, playing as many tracks as I do, I rarely look at these files.
