Overly cautious?

Del Mar announced yesterday, a good 4 days before that racing will be cancelled for Thursday's Thanksgiving card due to forecasted rain.

This is really being over cautious due to the breakdown problems in California.Forecasts out 4 or more days are subject to change and their accuracy isn't any guarantee. Its possible their overly concern may set a new trend for racing for all tracks. I for one have never heard of breakdowns occurring more on off tracks than on fast going. I wonder if they or for that matter anyone has those particular stats.

No one would call into question the safety of the horse and jock first but this maybe going too far and make one wonder what will be next, after all this is an outdoor sport and I'm sure wild horses run around in all kinds of weather.

I just hope their not conceding to PETA as it appears because PETA will never be satisfied till they reach their goal which is to shut it down completely.

This link is their announced close for Thursday.

Attendance

Hi Mitch

The real issue is attendance. The few people I know, Parking, Tram divers, server staff, and security are so worried about Saturdays attendance of only 4000.It was a beautiful day.
Sunday was also beautiful But I could tell the track was understaffed I left after the 4th race, just too tired, the trams were coming very infrequently. I HAVE TO take the disability golf card but the cart never came, They had to put me up front in the regular tram.
I was the only rider, usually when I leave after the 4th race there are many people still coming in, I would say only about 10 people were on the incoming tram. The parking lot was about a third of what it used to be,
The word around the track is the attendance and handle makes it not worth opening the gates on Thursday. S.A. went has gone to Friday Sat Sunday and holiday Mondays for awhile,
Horse racing can not support mid week cards. In the fall
Let's see how things go if DMR does better next summer

Hello Bill,

IMO players want action regardless of what day it is. Del Mar takes in a lot of simulcasting money and if not profitable on Thursdays than they should adjust their racing cards to exclude Thursdays.

I believe their just being over cautious however we'll see if they cancel a card on a weekend due to rain. Rain is inevitable and if the track can't handle it than they should do something to the track.

As an outdoor sport they should be collecting data for breakdowns on off tracks as compared to fast tracks, Same with very hard turf courses such as SA verses slower turf courses at other tracks.

Breakdowns are a necessary evil of the sport however everything possible should be done to keep it at a minimum. The rate of breakdowns at SA is just unacceptable especially as compared to other Cailf. tracks. Tougher illegal drugs enforcement violations across the nations certainly would help so would the sharing of information. Lets hope racing survives in Cailf.

Hope your doing better Bill and your days are not only brighter in sunny California but that you get that transplant very soon.

Post Rain

Hi Mitch

Funny fact about DMR and San Diego. From my Model/Profile. every time i download the results from each race from RDSS, I also add the track condition.
In 435 consecutive races from DMR, There have been 0 races on an off-track

In addition, I googled "How many games have the Padres been rained out"

There have only been 3 rainouts since 2004

Maybe DMR just wants to keep the No Off Tracks streak alive

That's possible Bill. Had they made this decision perhaps on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning I would have no problem with it and would never have given it another thought, but Sunday morning is suspect and suspicious at best.

Oh well onward to more important matters.

Happy Valley

After reading about the dismal state of SoCal racing it got me thinking about racing on the other side of the pond in Hong Kong. It is the middle of the week and Happy Valley is carding 9 races of fields of 12 horses. The 9th race just went off with over $6,000,000 in the the win pool.

What are they doing differently over there to have such a vibrant and healthy racing industry? Australia is the same. So is the UK. I wish they recorded fractional times so that we could use RDSS on their racing.

I live in Phoenix. Even we don't get that bent out of shape about rain!

Pook;

Hong Kong has a short meet and the only track there. Here we have too many tracks, long meets and not enough horses to go around. Numerous States has allowed for the tax revenue, Then it was the Lottery and now its Casino's.They are also very strict on their rules and have no problem ruling off trainers or jockeys. Here they look the other way on big trainers as they need to fill races.

I also wish they had PP's like us so we could play their races from an informed view. I thought that by now with the Breeders Cup and Trackus we would have that info but the wheels turn ever so slowly. Perhaps on day.

Good point Capcondo.
