Total Energy

I have been doing more reading and have seen multiple total energy equations...I know at least one came from the followups and I think another came from a Brohammer article.....

TE=(FPS Fraction 1)+(FPS Fraction 2)+(FPS Fraction 3)

TE=EP+(FPS Final Fraction)

TE=(FPS Fraction 1)+(FPS Fraction)+(FPS Fraction 3)/3

Is there a difference between the three? All they all valid?

Thanks in Advance!!!...John

John,

Formula 1 and 3 are the same thing from a rank point of view, but the difference between numbers will be 1/3 smaller. It is often useful to know the size of differences between horses' various factor measurements (a difference between 158.00 and 158.10 is less significant than between 158.00 and 159.00) and a bigger number simply provides more scale to express this range. But mathematically, there is no difference.

Formula 2 is less precise because you are taking the average velocity to the 2nd call (EP) rather than average during the first fraction and average during the 2nd fraction. EP masks significant high or low velocities during one or the other of F1 or F2.

As a convention, since around 1992, Sartin methodology has expressed Total Energy in software readouts as the sum of the 3 fractional velocities, your Formula 1. When comparing TE's to each other, we normally adjust from raw velocities by a distance equalization, a daily track variant and an inter-track variant set of adjustments.

Ted
