Adding 2 cents worth.
Using 5.5 f races is fine, however don’t use 5f pace lines, even in 51/2 races, as the calls are @ 3/16 and 3/8 and the stretch call is of course 4F. The stretch call corresponds to the 2nd call time, but there the first call @3/16 but l the ist call time is at 1/8 m. Similar for 4&1/2 F races @ DD.

Tim, do you keep the same rule on sprint with sprint, route with route where the track has a different configuration than standard tracks? Example would use a 8f Belmont line for a 7f race at Belmont ? Or a 7f line at dd for a 8f race at dd?

Generally I try to get a line from the same dist structure if all possible. I have no problem going back to get one if the horse is in form and a good APV. As for the 2nd part of the question that's not a cut and dry answer. Does the horse show that it can sprint or rt as the case maybe? Are the internals of the route fast enough to run with the sprinters in the race. Does it run too late to win a sprint at Bel. In the case of the sprinter what are its' %meds. Does it run to early to win a route at DD. For me I lean on my models for the info. I would suggest keeping some records on how sprinters stretching out or routers shortening do at the tracks you play. Oh also I look to see if the trainer does ok with these types of moves. Always keep in mind Docs' warning that projecting is more dangerous then is extracting.
