Happy Canada Day to all, and Happy 4th of July to all

OK, I'll mention the '800 pound gorilla in the room' (for Canadians). Canadian flags are flying happily around my city today - at half mast - a nod to the recent tragic discoveries of hundreds of unmarked graves at the sites of Residential Schools where Indigenous children were schooled out of their native cultures during the first 100+ years of Canada's initial existence and policies of 'assimilation'. This news is not news to most Canadians this summer, and it (rightly, IMO) is cause for reflection and for many (me) deep sorrow. First Nations peoples in Canada are absolutely at the bottom tier of society, for sure a direct consequence of that historical misguided colonial world-view. Perhaps I see this more in-my-face these days living on Vancouver Island where native cultures have such a presence, including for some, homeless on the streets.

But it was ever thus: to the victor goes the spoils, and the victors always write the history.

I guess I try to hold several (contradictory) thoughts in my mind and heart at the same time, not always an easy task:

1. I am absolutely proud and grateful to be living and have grown up in such a naturally beautiful, tolerant and peaceful (more or less) culture.

2. I am very aware of my state of privilege: white, literate, educated, financially secure, the first 2 thanks to my parents (thanks Mum!) and the latter 2 from some choices and hard work (assisted by luck and privilege).

3. It is an opportunity for any Canadian who cares to, to see the larger picture of how the the vaunted Canadian cultural and political ethos of 'community' and caring for each other has not really served all Canadians equally - particularly First Nations. And aside from 'thoughts and prayers' (which per the expression, plus $1.50 gets you a cup of coffee, yada, yada ...), how can any one person (e.g. me) do anything useful in response to this awareness? Perhaps, supporting local and national Indigenous operations which support survivors of the Residential Schools system. Perhaps pressuring politicians to actually enact what they've said they would from several past enquiries into all this. Perhaps simply sharing a point of view in daily conversations on the matter. I'm trying to be honest about this and work it all out for myself, instead of 'turning away'.

It's not impossible to hold ALL these things in mind/heart at the same time. I AM proud to be Canadian, and I accept to be putting that pride in a larger, perhaps more sober-minded context than I have done before. Maybe next year I'll celebrate a more traditional Canada Day ...

Just my 2 cents (OK, 20 cents). Happy celebrations to all!

Ted

Happy Canada day.
I spent many vacation days in Canada and always loved being there.
Spent many work days there, too....but to get to Oshawa to work, I had to drive by WOODBINE!
