You have me blushing. Coming from you, I take that highly. I don't waste time on arguing with others, only with myself when handicapping.

I like to think that I can learn a lot from others, or even just a little. But remaining flexible has always been my mantra to life in general. I'm not stuck in any handicapping format, and I'll go way back for a line if something recent says the horse is ready for a better effort today.

I only have guidelines, no rules.

I sure hope so. otherwise, we really wouldn't be any further advanced than using some pen-and-paper system of years ago.

For example, using the best of the last three may work a great deal of the time, but what other info is there to be had within the last three? Maybe there is a predictable pattern to be found, one that might justify going further back for a pace line.

Or what if two of the last three are from six months ago? Why not, if the last race gives one reason, go to a race of eight or nine months ago? Maybe it showed speed for 4F in the last and did so once before, right before a win. Certain trainers have patterns they repeat which few detect.

About thirty years ago, I bet an early year race for 2 year olds. I don't normally play such things. But the horse was a son of Jaipur and that bloodline tended to do well on wet tracks and it was raining that day. Plus, it was trained by Jose Martin who was having good success with recent first-time starters. At 10/1, it seemed to be worth a bet given all the unknowns in the race. It won, and a 20 dollar bet got me more than I was bringing home then on a weekly basis.
