Lost in dilution
We constantly hear, in our sports sections, the bemoaning of the rapid expansion of the NHL and the dilution of the talent pool. The same thing is now becoming a factor in the Breeder's Cup, particularly with the WIN and you're in idea. The concept of the best coming up against the best is beginning to get lost in the shuffle and having it over two days is just outright greed (seems to be the consensus I hear in the press room).
It is a positive that the track surface was repaired and seem to reflect the early nature that Anita always was. Having the races in a warm weather climate is really a knock against the European horses as many come over already sporting a winter coat. I cam recall an Arc winner was in distress in the heat and humidity of Florida one year after his race there all lathered up People also don't realize what a bum deal the simulcast outlets receive in the betting pools |

Maybe so
Good points Tim
However outside of Hambletonian day Only two days each year the Meadowlands needs to open two gates The usual west end gate and on Breeders cup day and Kentucky derby day They also open front main entrance gate Its still a mad dash to find seats and the pay to sit rooms are long sold out They have to like that at the Meadowlands hots dogs soda coffee and popcorn and oh yes parking rip offs if there is something going on at the stadium Bill |

Ego races
One of my wagering mentors, a real estate sales manager whom I met at
the harness races, gave me a real good object lesson as regards parimutuels that has stuck with me these many years since his passing. In essence: find a race that pays you to wager on it, not one you can brag about because it had made the front pages of the sports section. He pointed out, rationally, that most people need to stroke their ego by touting how they won the Kentucky Derby or, a germane topic for this week, a Breeder's Cup race. He went on to rationally state: THOSE races have so many good, well-meant horses that to objectively make money in the long term is a very difficult task AND you are up against some of the strongest competition out there :i.e. the Sheet palyers, Thorograph, etc. This fellow was the one who pointed me to the smaller markets where you are competing against bored housewives, retired folks etc., who don't have the tools to effectively figure out the races. UNLESS you find a big advanatge in these bigger pools (I think I have bet the Breeder's Cup about four times with horses that were OVERLAYS relative to how much of an advantage they had over their fields like Precisionist, Manila, Quija Board and a few junvenile winners), it is best to enjoy them for what they were designed to do: select champions from the best of the best. Good luck as I will be looking at Woodbine, Fort Erie and Hastings this weekend. |
