Dave,

Get the book Betting Thoroughbreds for the 21st Century by Steve Davidowitz
There is an excellent chapter in there on class.

Thanks both,

Mike, that's brilliant. It really amazes me the level of information available for US racing compared to here in the UK. Over here you'd have to pay for an expensive book with that amount of detail.

Shoeless, I will check that out. It appears to be out of print, but looks like there are second hand copies on amazon.

Hello,

I came by way of the Sartin Methodology via Modern Pace Handicapping by Brohamer. Since I am relatively new to handicapping and since I appreciate many aspects of the Sartin Method: the idea of focusing on the self and not just the horse and the iconoclastic nature of the project at the time are a few things I like. I decided to sign up in order to learn more and get a sense of the undistilled (no offence to Brohamer as the book aside from some typos is excellent) Sartin Methodology in order to appreciate it more and to help in my over all handicapping.

I greatly appreciate the generosity put forward by those who have made content available. Many, many thanks.

New member introduction

Hello all:

My name is Gary , I'm from New Jersey.

I'm a weekend warrior, have been involved in racing both as
an owner and breeder for the past twenty five years.

I've been fortunate to have won several handicapping contests in
my career, thought I undertood the Sartin system , and after
looking at the RDSS system have quickly realized my mistake.

I'm hoping to learn how to properly utilize the various tools
of RDSS and thank Ted for his patience during our initial
discussions.

Welcome to the group Gary...

It would be nice to hear some stories from behind the scenes and know how the trainers think and convey their tactics to you

Trainer Tactics

[quote=mikesal57;74918]Welcome to the group Gary...

It would be nice to hear some stories from behind the scenes and know how the trainers think and convey their tactics to you

Through the years I've been associated in NJ with Kate Demasi,Harry
Benson,in NY with Linda Rice, Mike Hushion,Gary Gullo and Jeff Odintz.

All of these trainers were truly concerned with keeping their
horses sound and would not run and would avoid workouts
if the horse was unfit.

All of these trainers were quite knowledgeable about the condition book and where these horses belonged based on their physical condition.

With the exception of Linda, known of the others ventured into
pace or speed discussions, but all of them kept me in a relatively good
financial position at year end. For the record, Linda was quite knowledgeable about
the Condition book and the horse's chances based upon the
the shape of the field. We rarely discussed speed or pace #'s,but
did review the entries and their running styles.

I'm presently in Breeding mode, own a NY Bred Malibu Moon Broodmare
(unraced) who dropped a foal(filly) in early April. The sire
is Street Boss and she will carry the Badge of a NY Bred .
We rebred the Mare to Silent Name, a son of Sunday Silence
who is standing at McMahon Farms in NY(site of Funny Cide).

We are pointing the filly for the Saratoga NY 2 Year old Sales,
and based upon the her development may consider
racing her due to the elevated purse structure in NY which should
begin 1/1/2012.

Based upon discussions with other trainers in the past
(who represented some of my friends) trainers such as
Rick Violette, Joe Pierce Joe Imperio were asking me
about the horse's chances when I showed up with reams of paper etc
which I attribute as conversation rather than real interest.

Finally, the trainer's trump card is having
a keen sense of the horse's physical condition which we
can only guess about based upn w/o's energy levels,
speed/pace #'s etc..Those #'s can be distorted by a trainer
when they utilze the race for conditioning purposes,
which has never been openly discussed with the parties mentioned above.

This is one of the reasons I'm greatly interested in RDSS
with the hopes of drilling down to explore potential trainer
tactics based upon the pp's.

Best,

Gary

Thanks BIll and Mike

Bill , I know I'm preaching to the choir, but I'll chime in that your
posts on understanding the factors in RDSS are incredible.

I just sent you a post on Certifiably Royal who won a race
near and dear to me helping win some $ in a handicapping contest at Del
and formerly owned by one of my friends in a syndicate.

regards

Gary

Gary...."preach" as much as you want...I'm sure everyone here is excited that we can hear from the owners side on how the trainers think and what they do to get a horse ready...

Yes..RDSS is just numbers but what you can bring to the table is priceless in developing ones handicapping skills

Whatever help I/we can do ..just ask!!

Good Luck with RDSS and your future endeavors...

Mike
