Breeders’ Cup Reportedly To Return To Churchill In 2011

Breeders’ Cup Ltd. is expected to announce on Friday that Churchill Downs will be the host site for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships for an eighth time in 2011.

The 2010 event already is scheduled to return to the Louisville track for the first time since 2006.

The Louisville Courier-Journal reported on Thursday afternoon that the World Championships would be back at Churchill for a second consecutive year in 2011. The newspaper did not cite a source for the information.

Breeders’ Cup officials were not available for comment. Breeders’ Cup and Churchill scheduled a joint press conference for 10 a.m. EDT at the track on Friday morning. Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear is scheduled to attend.

Earlier this year, Breeders’ Cup Ltd. considered instituting a permanent host by as early as 2011, and Santa Anita Park was mentioned as a leading candidate until a lease dispute arose between new Santa Anita owner MI Developments Inc. and the track’s fall operator, the Oak Tree Racing Association.

In 2008 and ’09, Santa Anita became the first track to host consecutive editions of the Breeders’ Cup. Over the winter, Santa Anita lost five racing days because of drainage issues with its synthetic Pro-Ride surface. MI Developments is considering options for replacing the surface.

Kentucky lawmakers passed a bill this spring that would allow Breeders’ Cup Ltd. to keep the pari-mutuel tax from this year’s event if the company commits by November 4 to returning to Kentucky in 2011 or ’12. Kentucky state Sen. Damon Thayer (R-Georgetown) estimated that the tax break could be worth $1-million this year. Thayer is a former Breeders’ Cup official.

Thayer said on Thursday that he was unaware of a decision on a site for 2011.

Breeders’ Cup board member Satish Sanan and Chairman Bill Farish issued a public apology in March after Sanan referred to Churchill as “probably the worst organization from a horse racing standpoint” and said the company would not deal with the Breeders’ Cup on revenue.

In a subsequent press release, Sanan said he regretted his “poor choice of words” that “mischaracterized the Breeders’ Cup’s relationship with Churchill Downs and other host sites.”
