While it was only a parody, my favorite memory of Burt Reynolds was how Norm Macdonald immortalized him on Saturday Night Live through the “Celebrity Jeopardy” skits. Even Burt Reynolds himself found the portrayal humorous. To the older generation, he will be remembered as Bandit, but to me, he will forever be the alter ego of “Turd Ferguson”... Rest In Peace.

My friend Joe Majors (Johnny Majors' younger brother) and Burt Reynolds were roommates at Florida State and played on the football team back in the mid-50's. FSU had only been co-educational since 1947 and it was still predominately female with about ten women for every man. Joe looked like a Greek statue, chiseled out of stone, and everyone knows what Burt looked like. I don't know when those boys got any rest.
Joe was a Sartin guy until the Doc got sick and he was trying other software when I met him. Back in those days, all the Nashville horseplayers were hanging out at Dueling Grounds, now Kentucky Downs. Joe introduced me to computer handicapping. Cancer took him about ten years ago. He had some great stories and he and Burt were life-long friends. |
