My Contenders: 6 - Shakhimat - will improve from Plate Trial 10 - Amis Gizmo - Plate Trial was impressive 13 - Gamble's Ghost - wide post position may hung out wide on the first turn 4 - Leavem in Malibu - not sure what to make of this horse, has high foot action suggesting he will like the turf or he did not like the track that day. What do I know |

Yes, sometimes females, and sometimes males, as last year's Shaman Ghost.

Trackmaster has released the file early, and it looks like a good card with 13 races and 5 Stakes races.

The Plate
The Queen’s Plate, the longest continuously run major stakes race in North America, has a long and varied history. During WWI it was held as a SINGLE contest in the midst of a country wide ban because of the war, just to keep the spirit of it going.
It was originally run (like most major races of the mid 1800’s) as a heat race: the winner had to successfully win two separate heats to be accorded the win. The conditions of the race: "Open to horses owned and bred in Upper Canada that had never won a match, purse or sweepstakes." It was only opened to horse outside of Ontario in the early 50's. It has been staged all over the province: Woodbine (continually since 1883), Guelph (Turf Club Course), Ottawa (Mutchman Driving Park), Toronto (Carleton course and Newmarket Course), St Catherine’s (Turf Club Grounds), London (Newmarket Race Course), Whitby (race course), Kingston (Cataraqui Course), Picton (Driving Park), Hamilton (Rider and Drivers Park), Woodstock, and Barrie (Barrie Park Course). In 1865 a “ringer” who ran under that name Stone Plover was disqualified when it turned out that the animal was American owned (Michigan) and the horse that ran was probably a winning gelding named Limerick Boy. A second horse was DQ’d in that same race due to a discrepancy of impost when weighing out. Source: The Plate: A Royal Tradition, by Emeritus Hall of Fame director Lou Cauz

One insight on the Plate
The front end has historically done very well in the Plate with T J's Lucky Moon the greatest example paying $166.00. Others, all of recent vintage, were Wando, Woodcarver, Dancethruthedawn, Nigon, Edenworld (close to wiring), my favorite Mike Fox (that year the TOP three ranked 2nd call colts ran 1 2 3), Midnight Aria and Strait of Dover..
Recall many of these are lightly raced and few have even gone 9 panels very often before.
