NYRA Mile aka Cigar MILE

The very good one, Forty Niner (whom I thought had a good shot for the Triple Crown races) won this first offering (and had been the previous year's two year old champs so a lot was expected of him at three).

Surprised by Winning Colors' speed in the Derby, this set off some kind of vendetta to score in the Preakness by taking out 49er wide the entire trip in Baltimore forced the filly to go wider. OH MY GOSH! there was a big editorial on the front page of the DRF about poor sportsmanship by Woody Stepehens...What rules did his colt break? One of the maneuvers to lessen the other speed in the race is to challenge it early is it not? As per usual however, when there is both a speed duel and some vendetta to deal with, BOTH tired out.

Rested, he came back under the brillant Laffit Pincay to score sucessive victories of Seeking the Gold (remeinded me of Affirmed in those two) oth by a nose in the Haskell and the Travers. (His victory at 10 furlongs cemented himself, accoring to the Bulll Hancock's standard of "getting 10 furlongs" as a three year makes a good sire). Both races masterfully ridden. He simply let the animal do what he does best. RUN EARLY.

Ran close in the Woodward to Alysheba next out-feather in the cap to taking on older and finishine 2nd.

Next, things got weird. Greedy owners did not like the time tested standard (for as long as I have followed the game) in awarding the winning rider of 10% of their purse. With purses now up in the millons, they did not want to lose $60,000. The riders went on STRIKE..The connections went ahead with the Mile run but used the UNKNOWN rider named Fox...In a great example that is the HORSE, not the rider who does the heavy lifting, 49er WIRED the field.

Even after the strike was over and settled, Claiborne connections did not want the services of Pincay and put Julie Krone in the saddle. HER EFFORTS. or the lack of them ( she completely missed the lane bias keeping 49er down on the deepest part of the going almost the entire trip after breaking him SLOWLY, as aspect that was NEVER part of his being) accounted signifiicantly in his loss, while Seeking the Gold (the colt he has twice defeated0 went to lane 2-3 the entire trip under Day and finished second.

A classical example of how a rider can MESS UP a horse just as much as Mr. Fox let the animal run.. In all my days, only a SINGLE ride was worse (Bid's Florida Derby) but then he was so superior in that contest that Ronnie Franklin's idiot maneuvers did not matter).

Welcome back to a wonderful contest even though it stirs up the memory to remind us all that riders CANNOT improve a horse but they can surely lessen it.
