Perceptor Usage Question

I received the following question, and gave the following answer to a new RDSS user. You can continue the discussion publicly here if you like

Do you use the PERCEPTOR ?
Then your following recommended steps.
Or do you go immediately to the last screen. ?
Any suggestions to a very confused handicapper.
I recommend using Perceptor rankings (for each horse’s pacelines) to determine an appropriate/representative line to represent it in the Analysis screens. If you use the Paceline Selection tool default strategy, Best of Last 3 comparable Perceptor rankings, the software will select a CONSISTENT line for every horse, every time. Of course, you can change lines manually, or choose an additional one to compare with the automated selection. Beware when a high Perceptor rank is due to a poor or mediocre performance against a fast pace of race (PoR). When in doubt, modify a line chosen so that the line is from a race where a horse has been COMPETITIVE and with a PoR it will likely face today (i.e. don’t penalize a horse by choosing a line with a faster PoR than any Early type horse will likely set today).

THEN, with lines chosen using Percpetor ratings, use the BLBL, VDC or better yet, the Rx ratings on the Rx+ Analysis screen. Downgrade from Primary group horses without at least 4 ratings of 5 or better from the VDC, CSR. ProfitLine and Prime Power columns (usually also the better rated Rx factors). Try to eliminate all but 4 horses from Primary group (i.e. moving the rest to Secondary group – can finish in the money – or to Non-Contenders). Use the live odds near post time to assemble a wager from 2 or 3 of the Primary horses to Win depending on odds offered, or other wager in Exacta or Tri/Super etc using Secondary horses underneath.

I do NOT use Perceptor to make final analysis decisions, only to get most representative pacelines. That’s what Sartin invented and how he used it (he called it the ‘paceline indicator’ in Validator). You still have to use all the other ratings, and an assessment of likely pace matchup – and of course the bet-time odds - to come up with a betting strategy. Always remembering: we are not looking for horses, we’re looking for BETS!

"Beware when a high Perceptor rank is due to a poor or mediocre performance against a fast pace of race (POR). When in doubt, modify a line chosen so that the line is from a race where a horse has been COMPETITIVE . . . "

I find that this is pretty much handled by following Sartin guidelines of not using a line where the horse was beaten by more than 7.5 lengths.
