Question about variants in Yellow Manual

I'm trying to learn how to handicap using the Yellow (Phase III) Manual. And I'm trying to learn to do it without using the computer (at least at first) so I completely understand everything my computer is doing. It says that the Variant has taken the place of all the distance adjustments that were previously calculated using pages 60-62. You put the Variant that you create into Open Adjustment and I assume this just gets added to the 3rd fraction and then SP, FW, etc. gets calculated from that. Is this correct? Also in the case of going from a route to a sprint, we need to use the original method in the manual of creating all brand new 1st, 2nd, and 3rd fractions - am I correct? How does that work with the other figures that you created using the variant? It seems there would be some mismatch there. Maybe I should just avoid races where I have to use such a paceline. Making these adjustments and actually understanding them is not so easy as it looks.

Another thing I've noticed is that the variants that are created using the computer are created with a different formula than the way they were originally created in the Yellow Manual. I can see the reasoning behind the way the Yellow Manual originally did it since they used deceleration times to make the adjustments. I guess they subtracted the effect that every extra 1/2 furlong would have on the final time. But the new formula is something like Formula W figured without beaten lengths (i.e. FW for the Pace of the Race rather than the Pace of the Horse). This new correction factor seems to work really well, but I'm not sure why.
