Excel Model file access problem

I'm replying here to this support email in case the reply can be helpful to others. Let me/us know the result of the advice below either privately, no worries, or in this thread if you like.

Quote:
All of a sudden – this morning – I am unable to open any Excel file from the “Models” folder in RDSS2 (the ones that
have been exported from the program). Neither the ones freshly sent last evening, nor any of the historical saves.

I get a “Microsoft Excel cannot open or save any more documents because there is not enough available memory or disk space
error message.

I can open any other Excel file on my computer – including ones newly created. I’m sure it is not actually a disk space issue.
Have you run into this before? Do you have any suggestions or possible fix?
This must have to do with recently changed settings on your computer from an MS Office update (i.e. because it didn't happen last night).

I googled "Microsoft Excel cannot open or save any more documents because there is not enough available memory or disk space" and among many other hits got this link from Microsoft Support channel: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...6-94601a28d7e2

As is often the case, the 'insufficient memory or disk space' message is a red-herring (points the wrong way)

In that Support discussion, among the answers, there was mention of changing the Excel Trust Center/Protected View settings (search that discussion for the phrase "protected view"). The advice given is: go to Excel File/Options/Trust Center/Trust Center Settings/Protected View/ ... then uncheck the various 'Enable Protected View ...' settings, perhaps one at a time, as a conservative approach. Maybe start with unchecking 'Enable Protected View for files located in potentially unsafe locations'.

Just speculating, but possibly newly updated Office/Excel settings (i.e. last night) recognize the RDSS-created Excel (older XLS format) files as originating from OUTSIDE your device - or 'trusted zone' i.e. you did not create them yourself with YOU as 'author') - and Excel is protecting you from potentially unsafe files (over-zealously).
