Uncoupled entries : an essay
Saratoga July 14
There were 5 races with uncoupled entries . One won and paid but $9. One long shot finished 3rd behind two well bet horses for a$50 Tri
Here’s a breakdown.
R3 Maker #3,7 9/2 & 5-1 finished last and 4 th in 6 horse race.
R6 B. Lucas 6&8 @21-1 and 15-1. Didn’t look like much finished 6th and 10th
R8 Clement had 2 both 7/2 finished first and 3 rd . Winner paid $9. Casse had 2 but one was AEand was scratched.
R9 Casse had 3 #3,10-1,#414-1 and #6 4-1. Interesting in that there were 2 standouts in the race, so it cried out to put the longer shots for 3rd. The #5 , longest, finished 3rd and the TRI paid $50. The 6 finished 4th so adventurous betters got $150 putting the Casse’s 3rd and 4th. Seems reasonable.
July 15 only 3 uncoupled pairs. 2 won
R5 Maker #1,5 @ 11/1 and 6/1 , fin 8 & 1. Paid $14.
R8 Thomas had #2 and 11, scratched the 2 and the 11 won@ $9
R9 Brown had #6and 7, scratched the 6 and the 7 finished 3rd@ 5/2.

Been away a few days it’s now the 22nd
R2 Pletcher has 2 the longer#4 won and paid $40…any questions?

Del Mar Aug 4 race 8. Bob Baffert, the king of the uncoupled entry angle IMO,
had two entries , one the 2.4 -1 second choice, the other entry named Fast and Shiny" off at 6.4 to 1, who won paying 14.80

Finding Trainers

As far as the uncoupled entry goes.
I find it best to go to Twinspires that way you can scan a
race track in 5 minutes or less and find the uncoupled entries.
Hit a 8.60 win and a 43.20 win. The 43.20 one had nothing going for
it in the RDDS. Nice angle.

This one was interesting

Mark Glatt had and uncoupled entry in the 9th race at Delmar on 9/03. One entry was a contender at 7-1. the other entry went off at 68-1, here's the kicker - the entry. named Spycatcher, WAS A MAIDEN ATTEMPTING TO WIN HIS FIRST RACE IN A GRADE 2 RACE. He did not win, but battled down the stretch to lose by 1/2 a length, paying 48.00 to place. Baffert had a uncoupled entry win in the 3rd as well paying around 8.00.

On Sunday Baffert had another uncoupled entry run 1,2 with his longest price horse paying 16.40. Later in the fifth race Baffert had 3 entries and won with 5-1 winner paying 13.00. Glatt scored again with a UCE in 9th with Traegar paying 39.80

Doug O'Neil scored with a UCE in the 10th paying 15.60

George Papaprodromou scored in the 11th with an UCE paying 26.20

Follower of the UCE had a very good day.

Agreed it's an interesting angle. Just for clarity -

On Sept 4 at Del Mar, across 11 races there were Uncoupled Entries (UCE) in 10 races, a total of 15 separate UCEs, sometimes 2 or 3 in the same race (e.g. Races 4,8,9,11). Baffert had 3 UCEs in Race 5.

Of these 15 UCEs which cost $62 for $2 Win bets on all horses involved, 5 hit paying collectively $89.70 for $2 - a profit of $27.70 or 44.6%. As mentioned, the last race UCE paid $26.20, or almost all of the profit on this angle for the day. More often, the longer odds or equally long odds entry won, often hard to skip the bet on a lower odds UCE horse. Still, nice day for the UCE angle

Maybe this was a typical day for this angle at a big track. Possibly not. It will be interesting when the RDSS update is ready making UCE's more visible, to see how this angle fares. I believe there are MORE aspects to deciding when to go with this angle and when to ignore it; when to make additional 'more likely' bets in the same race (thus watering down UCE profits when it hits) and when to hold your nose and put a deuce on the angle and then stick with your regular scheduled analysis.

In other words - NOT a magic bullet (as usual ). Not to rain on anyone's parade about nice hits especially when they all come on a single big day of racing (and especially if you had a few of them), though (as I frequently tell people reporting to me AMAZING ANGLES) - please show me ALL the hits and MISSES for the angle. Otherwise, the glowing reports can seem less genuine.

I thought I'd do it here for DMR Sept 4, but I welcome a similar Profit/Loss analysis from other days, now and then (including hits and misses).

Your faithful reporter ...

Ted
