Good Skill

We have a annual gathering at Saratoga every August. It would be nice to meet and work some 4aces with you

I have found the key race angle to be a mixed bag in no small part to the definition. In a six horse field if the winner and place horse win their next out it is a key race. The fourth place horse who lost by 16 lengths does this mean you should give him special consideration? If four horses have won and the third place horse is entered at a favorable distance and level I would take a second look. Those situations are rare.
I have and still do use angles in my handicapping but generally to make the final decision between the contenders RDSS has pin pointed.
If I may suggest an author that I think could benefit you. Mark Cramer is a very easy read and informative and contrarian.

Key Races

I limit my consideration of key races to Maiden Special Weight and Allowance NW-1X with large fields at major tracks. But generally, these races will be fast early and final time so you can see them just reviewing the pacelines. Often these winners will be immediately headed for stakes and graded races so it's pretty hard to sneak up on any horse that ran halfway decent against them.
The Key Race concept is from a former day when all you had was the racing form and results charts that you had to clip out and save. Anyone with a computer these days has all that information at their fingertips, so there is little wagering value.
