Quality of this years derby field

Only 4 horses had won a Grade 1 or Grade2. They finished 1,2,4,6. Wile there was quality at the top, not much depth. Of course, 6 quality horses did not make the race. Last year, 11 horses had won a Grade1 or Grade 2 before the derby. This year, 6 have won a Grade1 and another has 3 Grade 2 wins. Last years crop turned out very good.

It was an uninspiring field for sure. The Oaks had more depth to it.

Derby had more Gr.1 and 2 winners than the Woodward did.
And they ran faster.

These horses are still maturing and its pretty unpredictable at this point how this crop will fare in the future. Some mature fast while others mature late. The horse that placed 3rd in the Derby is an improving horse and may end up the best of all of them as a 4 yr. old ,its anybody's guess.

The Covid-19 has had an effect on both the schedule of races and the horses. I'd say a positive one in that it allowed more time for horses to come around and mature. Than again not all.

Its always difficult at best to compare past years crops and nothing but a guessing game. The only actual proof is if they were to meet in the same race which will never happen. Tracks change and get faster and slower from year to year. Saratoga this year and SA last year. Whip rules change and some horses are like humans in that they are lazy and must be aggressively ridden in the stretch for them tp perform up to their ability. This also is applicable to other sports such as baseball and football. How many home runs would the "Babe" have had if playing with todays modified balls, small parks, different bats and weak pitching due to expansion of leagues and teams. Or in the grasp fast whistles in football. Lets not even talk about steroids' and their effect on human and horses that were not around in the past era's.

King Guillermo that had to scratch may prove best of all or that 10 horse that flipped in the paddock. Horse racing is only a snapshot in time of those horses that were able to make the Derby or to make any race. Time never stops and everything is in a state of either improving or declining.
