Keeneland

Forty five years ago, on closing day, I leaned over that rail at Keeneland and watched my first horse race with friend Bill Noonan. Today, I'll be watching with friends Don E (Tazbo) and Charlie Judge. Ain't it grand!

Nice picture Mick. Say hello to Don for me and make a few bucks while you are at it.

It was a beautiful day in Lexington with friends and I think we all made a little money. Hoping for a repeat today.

Great pic Mick, wishing you success at a tough track. Say hi to Don. Although a tough track you'll be OK, just stay out of races your vibes aren't good. Trust your instincts.

Serious spot play is the only way to win at Keeneland. You can only depend on getting 1 winner a day there.

Track at Keeneland has changed

ScottB, you have a point. Anyone who thinks they can sweep the card at Keeneland is delusional. I hit a couple of trifectas which made for a decent week and covered a lot of whiffs.

Of particular interest though is how their maintenance crew has changed the track surface. For years and years, the stretch was a "no passing" zone. Horses on the lead coming out of the far turn won. And the percentage of gate-to-wire winners was very high. Not anymore.

Don and I watched a lot of pressers catching front runners in deep stretch, which made the handicapping even more difficult. The track is more tiring now for some reason. Perhaps they have softened it up and made it deeper because of all the bad news from Santa Anita. Frankly, I don't know but I saw what I saw.
