Having worked for Gasper when he started up his racing service I can tell you he was a very honest gentleman. We would talk about this stuff from time to time. I ust to kid him about the miracle turn around in form when horses were claimed by certain trainers of his time. He told me once there were things that he would do that were so simple I couldn't figure out why more trainers didn't do it. One thing he did was all his horses ate their hay on the stall floor. He pointed out that's the way they eat in the wild. By hanging the hay up it forced them to strain their necks from being in unnatural position. He also liked to claim older consistent animals. He didn't like dealing with younger ones. He was talking about coming back but then he left the scene.

One would think that after over 22 years of Lasix use in NY they would know what drugs are masked by Lasix and would test for them. Even more so at other tracks because NY was very late in allowing Lasix as compared to other tracks throughout the country. Even new drugs should show up as a foreign substance in a horses blood.

There are many owners and trainers who believe in only oats and hay who still make it so I'm not so sure of Gasper's real reason for leaving the game but it does enhance his reputation.

Also there are many trainers today who are exceptional at the claiming game so it can still be profitable for those with a sharp eye for a decent horse. Because the good purses in NY draw the best horses and trainers perhaps the competition became too tough. The better the horse and trainers the fewer mistakes for a claiming trainer to take advantage of.

The foaling rate has dropped significantly in recent years which has changed the game dramatically, particularity in field size and quality of horses. Don't take this to mean I condone drugging etc. it just that horse racing has been totally negligent in doing any research into the problems of racing such as causes of break downs. They sell John Q. Public any BS to quickly move the conversation away form their inapt treatment of the subject and the real causes which is their negligence. That negligence includes their lackadaisical attitude towards cheaters in the game at the expense of us fans.

Gasper trained basically for 1 owner Barbara Davis. I don't recall if she had past when he retired. Racing had better wake up. Now that sports betting is catching on in a lot of States there will be even less money being bet on horses. So far to bet on sports yoou basically have to go to a track to bet but it won't be long before they get it on the internet and there goes racing. Another thing is the take out in racing which is more then on sports betting. I heard where 1 big time horse player[over 2 mil a yr] has given up the ponies in favor of sports betting due to the take out. Racing needs a central ruling body and some innovated thinking.

I agree completely Tim. The takeout really gouges us and there are better propositions, even in a casino. There really isn't a central authority that looks out for the players even through we're the key ingredient for the end product.

They would be better off with a central ruling body, especially with DQ's, but don't hold your breath with these control freaks.

I worked with Doc Schmitt for a week back in 1982. That was some barn. Besides him were the Sedlaceks, Ferriola and Steve Jerkins.

I hate to bring up an old subject but I happened to read an article that was sent to me today in horse racing Nation, the online newspaper for horses, wheres Shug McGaughey was the subject of the article about code of honor and maximum security. I will put the link in this post so if you care to read the article all you do is click on the link. Apparently he feels the same way about maximum security that I do. Now if Max was to run in the saudi cup my advice is don't take a short price on this horse, however if you can get four or five to one on this horse look at it not as value but as a value trap like they do in the stock market with value stocks. Some stocks people look at as value stocks while some analysts or commentators refer to them as value traps. Happy New Year to all. Omar.

McGaughey is being nothing but a tout for his own interest. He wants to keep those big owners giving him those big price horses and to keep them coming. He's another who didn't have the best interest of COH at heart when he ran in the BC and should have "chicken out." He stated COH was a tired horse before the race and he ran like a pig.

The amount of money issue is a lame argument because if no DQ in Ky Derby Max would tower over COH. The difference in money earned is insignificant and one race can make a huge difference, particularity for young horses.

Did you notice he did not slam Omaha Beach for missing time do to an injury. Purely self interest here for his own gain and that of the owner. Double standard!

Why shouldn't voters in Texas have a say? Or any other part of the country. Fact of the matter is Shug is doing nothing more that jury nullification and attempting to taint the jury. Thankfully the jury is big enough that his influence perhaps won't accomplish that goal. While McGaughey is better know than Servis and will have some influence, but I believe the vote will be fair.

With these young horses only time and history will separate them. Its all about demonstrated performance. I wish Max luck in his journey, going to Dubai and taking on the worlds best doesn't sound like a chicken **** move to me.

Oh BTW why isn't COH running in the Pegasus or the big Dubai race? Ducking the Pegasus before the big vote? Now that's a chicken **** move by your own reasoning and own definition Omar.

Let it go Omar.Wishing them both safe journeys in 2020.

Oh I don't care either way I would never play that horse to begin with. the only time I would play that horse is if I knew the horse I'm using in the previous race is going to come back and pay a good double which is hard to do when when the horse in the following race like maximum security is going to go off at 2 to 5 however if you have a long enough horse in the first leg if you're going to get 50-60 $70 in the double throw em in by all means. The article stated that Coolmore bought 50% stake in Max, breeding and racing and that he'll be retired after his 4 yo campaign.
Yesterday I was able to get my hands on an old Randy Kovach program, Work Horse Pro V.2. Now I have all 3 of his programs, that plus Taulbot's Pace Calculator with his form points and Aodds Gold 98, which I no longer use.
This is my thing, I'm not using that program to handicap with per se, but I'm using it 2 monitor the results of the races to see if it's possible for me to distinguish between my top contenders with the programs I handicap with. I'm only using the new program to analyze the horses that it's picking based on the race results. I'm not interested in how it's coming up with the horses, I'm only interested in monitoring the selections of that program with the results to see how reliable that program is, if there's a way I could distinguish based on that programs selections to my top contenders that I handicapped with my main programs, in other words I'm handicapping that program. I always said when you get a new program handicap the program first before you use it. In other words I want to know what the program could do for me with my style of handicapping and betting as opposed to what the programmer meant the program to do. I can't get into the program to reprogram it, and I'm not interested in that I'm not going through all that. And based on yesterday's results from Gulfstream Park I see this program has some potential for me. We both came up with a 9 horse in the first race, a $51 horse. So I will continue to monitor this program and if I see it has a potential for me I will use it if not I will just discard it. If that's a sign of things to come then this should be another good year for me.
