Pilot, did you ever get Spec to work on Win 10? I have Win 8.1 and it tells me no data files installed, although they are on Trkmast.

I've been told that Spec will run without dosbox AND recognize TRKMAST DATA on a 32 bit computer. Does anyone here know if that's true?

Lefty, I have run Spec and Val natively (without DosBox) on my old Win Vista 32 bit computer. I presume Win 7 would work as well. Just put the TrackMaster files on c:\trkmast.

On Win 8 or 10 (on 64 bit Windows) you need the 64 bit DosBox. I think it's described elsewhere in this Forum, but you MOUNT a DosBox Drive C as an alias for (say) C:\Spec160. So then, since Spec (and Val) insist of finding data on C:\trkmast folder, you would need to place TrackMaser files in C:\spec160\trkmast folder (so that in DosBox, that looks like C:\trkmast

And - if you use RDSS, you can export TrackMaster data files to that folder so Spec/Val can use them (that's how we proved to Doc that RDSS in Val mode created identical readouts).

Lol - I just read my previous post from 2019 above. Sorry, I literally said about the same thing again

So, either post will do. Anyway, that's all I got. Good luck!

If the software runs in a 32 bit environment, can't you set a virtual machine and install either windows xp or 7 and run it in that? Once you set it up you do not have to mount and dismount drives each time you want to use it.

Yes indeed you can do that too. Install VirtualBox, VMWare, MS Hyper-V, etc. Then obtain and install an older Windows version (XP, Win7), then install Speculator/Validator, whatever.

Or, install DosBox on an existing Win10 with an existing Speculator/Validator, set up a batch file to config and run it.

Several options.

I have Dosbox but when I look for 64 bit dosbox all I can find is 32 bit.
The rest is over my head...

That's the one - 32 bit version:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/dos...r.exe/download

Works like a charm on Windows 10. Comes with instructions (or use the hints in this Thread).

https://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1

Lefty, if you can load Speculator in your Windows 8.1 - congratulations: ALL functionality of Spec should then work for you. If you can't even load it, you need DosBox (or some other more complex solution, if you prefer), per the above discussion.

if you can run Spec without DosBox but can't find any TrackMaster files (i.e. in c:\trkmast folder) - well, how do know there ARE any files there - did you check?

If you are running Spec within DosBox, per the above discussions, TrackMaster files need to be placed in c:\spec160\trkmast folder.

FWIW (and not to belabour the point) - all these pesky issues running old DOS programs is why I rewrote Spec and Val 15 years ago for Windows and called it RDSS.
