Kentucky Derby: Who's hot, who's not for April 18, 2018

By Jay Privman

Magnum Moon wins the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby last Saturday.

WHO’S HOT
Magnum Moon, the winner of the Arkansas Derby on Saturday, is now the co-second choice on the Kentucky Derby line set by Mike Watchmaker, Daily Racing Form’s national handicapper. After being 10-1 last week, he is now down to 6-1, the same price as Mendelssohn. The favorite remains Justify, whose price was lowered a tick by Watchmaker to 7-2 after being 4-1 last week. The lone newcomer to the Derby Watch top 20 is Firenze Fire, who made the list owing to the defection of Runaway Ghost. Firenze Fire is 50-1 on Watchmaker’s line, one of five horses at that price, the longest price quoted by Watchmaker on this field.

WHO’S NOT
The injury to Runaway Ghost in a workout on Saturday removed him from Derby consideration and opened up a spot for Firenze Fire on a top-20 list that is now completely beholden to rankings on Churchill Downs’s points list. Owing to the odds drop on both Justify and Magnum Moon, Watchmaker raised the prices on several runners. Good Magic is now 12-1 after being 10-1 a week ago, Vino Rosso is up to 15-1 from 12-1, and Enticed, Hofburg, and Solomini are all up to 30-1 from last week’s 20-1.

ON THE BUBBLE
The points list tells all. Combatant is on the bubble and would have the opportunity to make the field if there is a defection from the top 20. Blended Citizen would run in the Derby if there are enough withdrawals to get him in.
