Smart Money

From the Sports Illustrated article on California Chrome:

(Both owners placed Derby future-book bets on California Chrome: Coburn got $1,000 down at 200-1 in January, the same month that Martin's daughter, Kelly, 26, made a trip to Las Vegas with friends and made a total of $500 in bets at odds ranging from 175-1 to 275-1.)

Great story...

They always say breed to the best and hope for the best...but sometimes, it is better to be a "Lucky Pulpit."

On the flip side of this post..

Someone wagered a cool $million on Candy Boy in the Derby, dropping the odds on Candy Boy from 16 to one to 9 to one.

Candy Boy had a bit of trouble in the race, but perhaps not enough to cost him much higher of a placing. You could look at his PPs two ways. One way was to say in his last vs. CC he was a short horse and that the race should tighten him up. I did not so much buy into that logic as much as his mile time was top five, better if you take away CC's 2nd mile time that was also top five. I thought he might be better than the rest and get second. That being said, the way CC pulled away from him in the previous race was scary. Candy lost positions AND 6 lengths while only being able to be as close as a half length behind at the six furlongs. It was probably too much improvement to expect. Going in, there were only two closer types that had closed against a 112 six furlong time, Candy Boy and Wicked Strong.

On to the Preakness.....
