Hi everyone

Iam very excited about learning and playing with the match up. It is great to sit with the form and work the races. I have been having some luck spot playing earlies but iam sure iam just getting lucky.
My question for the group is what is the best way to learn it. Iam going to be off of work for some time and have alot of time on my hands. ( i am a juv delq counselor who recently had his finger bitten off ) Learning something new will keep my mind occupied .

Also are there still copies of the book avaliable?
Thanks in advance
Punch

** Welcome Punch! The book is sold out. Let me put out some feelers as I have a couple of fellas looking for it ok? In the meantime download Jim's "5 step approach to the races", It's post #2 in this link

Greetngs Punch...........

Take a hard look on Ebay. You might get lucky. Look for Jim Bradshaw's "Match-up" manual. That's an old Sartin publication. And Jim wrote "the Match-up" in paperback in the early 90's. It was in bookstores. I don't know the publisher, and I only breezed through it before I returned it to a friend.

Also, there are guys on this site that have a lot of the old material on hard disk, and maybe one of them can e-mail you the match up manual.

Good luck!

Very simple.

1) Study " HAT CHECK " from the very 1st post

2) TRIPLE read and study ALL Hat check post by THE HAT and RICHIE P.

3) Do what Richie says, follow the 5 step posted here.

4) Go to Club Pace and Cap, listen to MR. Bradshaw go over the MatchUp in
PaceLine Manual audio. Find the race to follow along in the PaceLine
Manual there.

In my humble opinion , even if you owned all 3 MatchUp books, these post break down and go well beyond all 3. To me, the MatchUp books are supplementary to THIS post , "HAT CHECK".

Mr. Jim " THE HAT " Bradshaw has created a comprehensive/Lab/classroom version and step by step interactive tuturiol of whats in all the books here :

"HAT CHECK" and The New MatchUp Guy, "RICHARD PIZZICARA" (RichieP)

These post are like unpublished versions : The MatchUp 4,5,and 6.

To say this is a Library of Congress as far as The MatchUp is concerned is an understatement. Dive head first into the post here, no need to look elsewhere for supplementary knowledge as far as The MatchUp is concerned because believe me, I looked, and nowhere else does it get better than here, NOWHERE, unless in was written by Dr. Howard G. Sartin himself.

These post are comprehensive and fits for all types. Some read the Red Manual, and took off running, never looking back. Some took the other versions and never looked back. I'm not that smart, so I'm saying whatever your level, these post will SEAL IT for you.

You are going to have MORE than your hands full absorbing these post.

Good Luck

Also read post " HAT Beginners Class ". I think some or all of this is in the 5-Step Approach.

I'm getting better results by re-reading these post.

Here's an example. In Lesson 2 of HAT Beginner's Class, here is an excerpt:

1. Look at the first fraction and see which horse will have the lead.

2. What type of lead does the runner need. Open lengths, or can the
runner fight?

3. What happens if he is challenged?

4. Is there any early challengers in today’s race?

5. Is the runner a quitter?

I was concentrating TOO MUCH on step 2,3,4,and 5 and going off to left field without simply concentrating and CEMENTING STEP 1 , before proceeding to the other steps.

In the 5 step procedure, he says you must master all the steps.

FOCUSING on the above Step 1 changed my progress Big Time. A VERY simple , VERY dumb mistake: not FOCUSING and SECURING the step by step facts of todays race based on the BASICS before proceeding on. Such a slow learner......

Thinking you understand something and after the 100th read, realize you did not and/or you mis-applied it.

A lot of people either quit and give up, say it doesn't work or move on based on the above error a big percentage of the time. I especially read this time and time again on another horse racing forum. These guys put their MatchUp book on ebay or whatever, and don't realize what they have: the keys to to vault and one of the BEST explainations and procedures of why horses behave, win, and lose at the racetrack.

Don't believe it?

Look over the forum, anywhere, and see how consistant a concensus you get from folks on what running style a particular horse has. Can be various.

Because a horse is 2nd half a length off at the 1st call in a running line does not necessarily mean he will force the boss horse to run faster.

Knowing which horses TRUELY WILL make the #1 Early horse who has the lead at the 1st call run faster than he wants and /or not give him his comfort lengths lead will result in worlds of progress.
