Ellis Park Meet Scratched

Every year I look forward to the Ellis Park meet. The meet has been canceled and it looks like the track could close from lack of revenue. Damn shame !!

I feel sorry for people that are losing employment. The horseman's association is really digging in and determined to do whatever it takes to get a larger slice of the simulcast pie. I imagine they are an unpopular group right now. Given the circumstances, I do not blame Geary for closing Ellis.

In the long run, for racing to prosper, more tracks are going to need to close or cut back drastically on the number of days.

Here's a link where you can read about the parks closing. No one wins from this one.

The above is a story of current situation based on a news story from WFIE tv in Evansville, In which is right near Ellis Park. Doesn't sound promising, but at this time there is still hope for a summer of racing at Ellis. I for one will miss going there.

“I deeply regret Ron Geary, a racetrack owner with great love of the sport and an overwhelming desire to serve the pari-mutuel wagering public, has been forced to close Ellis Park, an esteemed member of the TRA since 1974 and a western Kentucky attraction for more than 80 years. I’m also gravely concerned about the circumstances surrounding this serious and unnecessary development. Racetracks and participating horsemen share a common interest in distributing their simulcast signal as widely as possible for the best possible revenue return,

Ellis Park reopening on 7/11/08

Maybe, just maybe some people in this industry will finally see the light. Can only hope that Mr. Geary is successful as he is one of the few that care about making the sport more "fan friendly". Personally look forward to many visits this summer.

Sorry, but I STRONGLY disagree with this. For the following reasons:

1. If you close a number of race tracks, then simulcasting from those states will also be gone. Internet betting from states which no longer have a race track may be prohibited from wagering on line.So you may be out of action.

2. % of winning favorites will dramatically increase with the reduction of feeder tracks. Shippers are one of the main components in increasing payouts. If you only have a limited number of tracks it will be almost impossible to find overlays. With only a few tracks every angle, statistic and bit of information will be out there on the remaining tracks. With few tracks, players will spend more time handicxapping the remaining tracks and will make fewer mistakes.

3. Just becouse a track closes this doesn't mean those horses will ship to your track. Does anyone believe a MN bred is going to ship to Del Mar becouse CBY closes.

The game will be impossible to beat and will die out.

Horse Racing may be dying but it is not becouse there are 2 many tracks but becouse of all the HIGH TAKEOUT bets are destroying their customers bankrolls . All these exotic bets are the tool used by race tracks to clean out their customers wallets. Anytime you REDISTRIBUTE wealth from the many to the few which these exotics with their high takeouts do you crumble your deck of cards.Get rid of all trifectas, superfectas, P3, P4, exactas and maybe then people will have money to keep the betting handle churning.

I have been a regular player at CBY since they opened in 1985, I may be one of the last of this group remaining. All the people that I hanged out with in the first 10 years or so are gone. Most of them quit becouse the game was tough and they lost money. The VAST magority of their losses where on exactas , Tris and the like. These people are gone most likely for good , CBY will not be getting action from them.

When you create DIFFICULT wagers with the lure of of a big payoff it is easy to see that you will have a high risk of tapping out your customer and making them into a former customer.

Race tracks are NOT casinos but yet race tracks seek to find new ways into making their betting into a PROP CRAPS bet. They do this with the ADDED BENEFIT of FLEECING their customers out of an additional 8, 9 10 plus % takeout, Their thinking: we are stupid that we won't notice the higher takeout becouse of the larger payout. Higher takeout = More Lossing players
which= more players who are out of betting funds.

And now a word from Ellis Park,

Just received a quick response from Ellis Park regarding the ADW betting organizations they've negotiated contracts with. Bob Jackson, Director of Operations, tells me the following will be available for Friday opening day.

TVG
HRTV
Twinspires.com
YouBet.Com
Xrpress.com
AmWest ADW
Bet America
Betpad

He also implied negotions are continuing with other organizations, or I could be reading more into his e-mail than the intended?

Regards,
Chris
