Gulfstream
So I was talking with Tim (LT1) and Richie (rmath) over the weekend while we were playing GP. I noticed that they "seem" to have 2 different turf courses. They only list one on the PP's. They are definitely using an inner and an outer.
Does anyone have info on this? -Matt |

Hi Matt
I'm not a Gulf-stream fan but I did find this From google search "2010 For people who have handicapped Gulfstream in the Past, the first question may be, “What is different this year?” According to Cobb, “The newest twist is the splitting of the turf course into an inner and outer course. The word is that the inner course may be somewhat more than usually favorable to speed. However, I haven't really had a chance to verify that for myself. The outer course should run more like a normal turf course, but bear in mind that the Gulfstream Park course is a bit sandy and a little faster than most courses.” |

Yepper Bill, and (per article this morning) the GP handle is very healthy too, at rate of 7X Calder.

Thanks Bill it was driving me crazy the other day. Don't understand why none of the pps note that they are running on an inner and outer. Makes a big difference when keeping a model

Query under way to TrackMaster - I'll report back.
For example, GP Sunday Dec 8: Races 2 & 9 ran on the Outer Course, DTV = -11 Races 5, 8 & 10 ran on the Inner Course, DTV = +25 Those DTVs per the TrackMaster data Result Charts, though the distinction does not show up on Equibase or BRIS PDF Result Charts. Nor in the current PP data set. It's pretty clear if you watch the first few seconds of the Video Replays ... Ted

This from TrackMaster:
Unlike Saratoga, or Belmont or Colonial - Gulfstream does NOT report a distinction in Inner and Outer tracks to Equibase, who consequently cannot report the distinction to all users of Equibase supplied data (i.e. all data vendors). Neither in PPs, Result Charts nor Entries. However, the track DOES report to Equibase the distance of the Turf rail for each Turf race. So - TrackMaster uses this to figure out whether a race will be running on the Inner or Outer Turf course, for Entries for today's race, for Charts and for PPs. It does this for the purposes of calculating ITV and DTV figures for each Turf course. But - Trackmaster apparently does not want its data reporting to be at odds with that of other main data vendors (e.g. DRF, BRIS), so because they do not show a different code for GP Inner versus Outer Turf, neither does TrackMaster. Unfortunately, rail distance info is not a component of any RDSS data files. So, RDSS cannot show that info - or calculate from it Inner versus Outer Turf course. Shoddy work by Gulfstream if you ask me. I have made arrangements for RDSS to get this 'rail distance' info for PPs (which include Entry info for each race), but it will be perhaps sometime into the 1st Quarter of next year before this can be programmed and included in a future release of RDSS. One thing you CAN do now, though it requires some data keeping - is to go over some Equibase or BRIS Result Charts and make a quick 'map' of race distances and rail distances for each. It may quickly become clear that certain distances are ALWAYS run on one course or another. Then you have the answer in advance of the race. For example, on Sunday December 8 there were 5 Turf races: Race2: 5f, rail 96 feet = Outer Race9: 8.5f, rail 96 feet = Outer Races5,8,10: 8.0f, rail 24 feet = Inner Perhaps from this we can infer that all sprints and 8.5f races (maybe others) are run on the Outer course. And all 8.0f races are run on the Inner course. Again, video replays are a good double-check - but the Charted rail distances also appear to confirm. It's a start ... Ted

Thanks for the info Ted. That's rather shady of GP... If the distances stay consistent, I guess that would be OK. Either way, how do they get away with not telling people the facts?
