Hi Charlie, welcome to Pace and Cap! Some people think watching the toteboard for wagering insight is like Bigfoot - on the one hand, he doesn't exist; on the other hand, he's beaming mind-waves into the faithful and holding meetings with the Loch Ness monster and David Suzuki.

I think the truth may be out there, somewhere in between the extremes re watching the toteboard. I am certainly interested in what can be proven, and have attempted to add some initial insights into inter-pool ratios in my RDSS software. I am always interested to learn more, especially if backed up by facts, which can be difficult to do without a lot of database work.

Feel free to hold forth!

cheers!

Ted

Charting the TOTE board no longer works with co-mingled parimutuels. All the simulcast wagering comes in with pulses from the five major hubs around North America. Sometimes these infusions are delayed and three or four flood the totals all at once, NOT being representative of the on track money at all. I went down to the CPMA (Canadian Parimutuel Agency) office deep in the grandstands and watched their monitoring screens and was simply amazed at how they can dissect wagers down to as little as $10.00

If you ever watched the great FRONTLINE show "The Other Side of the Track," they went into the wagering monitoring station at the NYRA and showed the algorithms they used to monitor irregular betting patterns.

Our director of Parimutuels told me long ago that anyone able to see any patterns nowadays is either kidding themselves or they are seeing "ghosts." Even with THEIR computer monitoring of wagering input, it takes a computer to figure out patterns amidst all of that input.

"tote action"

Tote action is very effective at mid to small tracks,I spent my 1st 10+
years at the track charting tote action. At big tracks inside action
gets buried.
write down 1st flash or 1st 1,000 in win pool
write down 12 min flash
write down 7 min flash-6-5-4-3-2-1- at gate

THE MOST EFFECTIVE PATTERN I HAVE SEEN IN MY YEARS IS WHAT I
CALL A CONFIRMED NON PUBLIC $ PATTERN
10
8
11
12
12
10
11
11
12
10 THIS IS AN IDEAL PATTERN WHAT FOR THESE AND YOU WILL CASH
AT A HIGH WIN% 50-60% PATIENCE AND SITTING ON YOUR WALLET.
SOMETIMES 2-3 BETS A DAY PLAYING 2 TRACKS, SOME TIMES 0
BETS.

In my 31+ years of cappin the best play in racing is a "PIG" ON PAPER
takes non public$ and is driven down to 1st or 2nd fav. at post time

ToteBoard Charting

The only toteboard action I noticed is, "no action". What I mean by this is,
if the M/L is say 3/1/or 4/1 at the first flash and remains that way at post time with virtually
no change in between.............Then the horse does not win or rarely is ITM.
This is my observation only without compiling stats.

hi ernie i concur with you on this EXCEPT when only ONE horse opens say at 5-1 and remains at 5 till post this one is a killer...charlie
