Belmont, Sun October 12

Columbus discovered the Americas today back in 1492, so let's see if we can honor him by discovering a winner.

The first race has me perplexed. There's more speed here than in a college student's meth lab.

But I'm not convinced the supposed closers have the goods either.

So, only because it comes out on top in BL/BL will I go with Benny the Waiter as my selection - just not sure if it will be anything other than a mental bet.

It ended up only being a mental bet, and even though I had the winner, I'm glad that I stayed out. The odds weren't worth the risk, but i still have the satisfaction of knowing that my handicapping was correct.

As with the first race, the third at Belmont looks to be another speed duel. This time there's two of them on the inside (1 and 2) and another speedball sitting outside (the 6 horse).

I've got a tie between the 1 and 2 as top contenders and if the odds are right, I'll go with both.

Moving on to the fourth at Belmont, just to have something to root for, I'll make token bets ($2.00) on the 2 and the 6. I'm not crazy about the mix of stretchers and lightly raced horses, so I don't want to do more investing than that.

Bel 8

Finally, a turf race with the eighth coming up.

My rankings come up 7-3-4 and I'll likely go with the best odds of those three at five minutes before post time.
