For illustration purposes, let's take last nights race from CTX where the winner paid $ 9.00.

If I were to bet equal units of $10.00 each on 2 horses and got the winner, MY ROI would have been 1.25 (a $25.00 return on $ 20.00 bet).

Instead I chose to hedge the shorter price pick (break even) and place my 2 horse picks as a single unit bet ($ 10.00). My higher priced horse won and yielded $ 17.00 on a $10.00 bet (ROI 1.70)
I risked half the amount and got a better ROI. In the long run this will prove to be a more prudent way to bet, because betting into short odds horses, in my opinion is not the way to make money, especially if you are a 2 horse bettor. See example below.
As illustrated, this method of betting allow me to place slightly more money on the higher priced horse. In the long run this will add up.

That's another good way to go,Partsnut...or bet the third choice if the odds
were good...I remember Mark Cramer when he bet two high odds horses from
the Methodology's top picks and made a good profit, which he donated to
charity....I think he did 50 races and proved that it can be done...

An acquaintance at the racebook gave me this advice that turned my
betting life around...On win betting, only pick contenders or horses that
you plan to bet if the software picks them....never put horses in the program
just because you need more than four or more contenders....some horses
are not real strong bets for win betting...maybe for exactas or tris, but not
for win bets....

That works real well if you are only betting to win, should be serious for the pick 3 as well. The Tri on the other hand is a whole different way to go.

My suggestion to some who are struggling is to specialize. My specialty is
turf routes, because i make a good profit betting on two horses in this type
of races.I keep very detailed records and always make sure that i study and
analyze my bets.I have found success by doing this, instead of handicapping
and betting on each and every race that's on the card...Find what works
for you....

Obviously, everyone needs to do what works best for them personally. I find two horse betting to be very nearly an absolute neccessity for me. If I start missing too many races, my self condifence suffers and I start zigging and zaqging and digging a hole that turns into a spiral of losses until I slap myself around a bit and get back on course.

I envy those who can handle the longer runouts of one horse betting. I have found though that I'm just not one of them. With some of the tracks I play, the runouts on two horse betting get fairly nerve racking.

Even on two-horse betting, expect losing streaks to happen. That is why
having a sufficient bankroll is very important. The mark of a real winning
player is how he reacts to losing streaks. Many players look for a new
software program everytime they start to lose. It's very common to see horse
players with five handicapping programs in their computer.Last year, betting
on two horses,i loss 17 bets in a row.But eventually pulled out of it.There
was a point where i started questioning myself...maybe go back to having
a regular job...the bills were always coming and the regular expenses of
daily living...I guess you learn more about yourself in moments like this...well,
i'm still here...

Only five? Heck, I have 9 on my computer right now. Never use more than one at a time.
