I found a good enough answer to these questions:

"Are the individual runners' "early speed points" calculated by RDSS?, and how?
Is it about the runner's competitive lines?,
or just based on early position and beaten lengths?;
and is the "RS & early speed points" designation limited to recency (or a set number of lines back in the PPs)?

I thought I did read that RDSS does an average of the runner's
early position & lengths behind; but I don't know how many lines back
RDSS goes.

I'm aware of how William Quirin used to add up the "early speed points";
and how Dave Schwartz did it about 6 years ago."


It looks like RDSS scans all of the runner's visible lines in the PPs.

From a post from Ted on 4/11/2025:
"We accumulate 'Early Speed' points from a horse's entire performance at the 1st Call point. We allow for extra points for finishing well when up close at the 2nd call point - so there is at least a hint of performance appreciation through the 2nd call.

We then rate the horses with ES points accumulating through the 62% mark. A horse on that boundary is identified as a potential 'Swing' horse (can go either Early or Late, depending). All other horses (i.e. having lower ES points) are identified as Late running horses. This points accumulation through 62% - and designation as Early/Swing/Late - is demonstrated in the Early Speed % column on the NewPace screen, and is sortable by those ES% values to more clearly see the flow from Early through Late runners."
