Synergism III Bob Purdy

Really appreciate being able to listen to the Las Vegas seminar tapes in the Club Pace and Cap area. For velocity users I found Bob Purdy's presentation of the then new Synergism III program. This is not word for word what Bob Purdy said but it is accurate enough.

I was listening to a Sartin seminar from Las Vegas from November 1991.
Bob Purdy was just starting to introduce a new version of Synergism at the time which was Synergism III. This seminar came at the time that Dick Schmidt and Tom Hambleton were releasing the book PMTR. Anyhow Synergism III was not marketed by PIRCO since they were moving into the Energy/THOROMATION programs.

The more salient points that Bob Purdy talked about in Synergism III in no particular order which I found enlightening were as follows.
1) At the time he used the pars put out by Dave Schwartz. Previous versions of Synergism used a "QUASI Meridian Variant" as Bob Purdy called it. He felt the adjustment process was better in Synergism III.
2) The fractional times were not in FPS but the more traditional times as portrayed in the DRF. Bob Purdy did stress though that all the calculations were still being done in FPS internally and than converted to traditional fractional times. These fractional times are adjusted fractional times.
3) The fractional par times in the Par File was not used in the adjustment process. It was only used to adjust a sprinter into a route to detemine an accurate "MULTIPLIER".
4) The ADV (Average Daily Variant) and 3 year best also contained in the par file were used however. The ADV was used to detrmine a "Par Variant" per track; and the 3 year best was used to determine your Track to Track adjustment. Although the par file had a number for track class it appears it is not being used in Synergism III and can be turned on and off in Synergism IV. Tom Brohamer who also was a speaker at the Seminar said he never made adjustments for "Track Class" and Jim Bradshaw concurred with him. This "track class"
adjustment can be very subjective and I will probably turn this this off in Synergism IV configuration. This is an option in the Syn IV program.
5) Synergism III also was the first Synergism program to use TPR ratings. Bob Purdy stressed that these TPR ratings may not match the output of other TPR programs but the relationships will remain the same.
6) Bob Purdy stated he created this program for the "Velocity and Numbers" oriented people and the target audience was the professional player.

My Comments: I found what Bob Purdy had to say about Synergism III clear and to the point. Listening to his presentation also cleared up some questions on what part of the par file the program was using. I am not absolutely sure but it may be Synergism IV may be using the fractional par times in the adjustment process in addition to ADV; 3 Year Best; and Track Class.

Bob Purdy has always been one of PIRCO's best teachers and always willing to help with questions even though he is involved in other business pursuits not related to horseracing. He is a class act and Synergism is still a very good program that still works today. Hope you found some of this information useful as I have.

Interesting stuff. First program I bought and used when I joined PIRCO was Syn 2. I think it cost something like $250 at the time (around 1989). I'm listening to some tapes now from August 1987 where Synergism is being introduced.

I agree with you about Bob Purdy - always one of my favorite listens. I emailed him a question a couple of months ago and even though he couldn't really help me. he responded and was very cordial.

actually, i think synerIII does use an adjustment for track class. i do not add the three year best times to my par-time database (using PE), and the program will then use the track class adjustment.

tlt; you are absolutely correct. Syn III does you track class also. See my other post where I compared Synergism III and Synergism IV.

Thanks for the clarification.
