Good, as it so rarely happens a decision was based upon what was best for the colt and not best for the connections ego. We will not soon forget Unbridled Song and several others pushed for the wrong reasons.

Majestic Prince was almost lame and Canonero II had a full blown Thrush infection going into the Belmont and both were compromised big time.

Majestic Prince

Majestic Prince was dead lame going in the Belmont and Hall of Famer Johnny Longden, who trained the colt thru his unbeaten campaign, said the horse shouldn't run in the Belmont at all, Triple Crown or no Triple Crown.

The owner--McMahon (??)--overruled Longden and Majestic Prince got thumped, and never raced again.

Longden quit training for the guy immediately after the race.

The silly media would prove how little they know by voting the owner Sportsman of the Year, for god's sake.

Canonero II

Is another that shouldn't have run in his Belmont but the suits knew what the entire Hispanic community would flock to the race track for a Triple Crown attempt by the Venezuelianflash -- I think there were over 61,000 in attendance.

Canonero II would not win another race until the next year winning over Riva Ridge as a 4-year-old for King Ranch.

Tim, good of you to have brought all this up.

I was pretty sure that the Jerkens's would not have run the horse if the colt was less than 100 per cent, but you never really know for sure around this time of year. Thank goodness there's still some classy and dedicated horsemen left in this game.
